Last week, I had the opportunity to try Google Glass for the first time at the #DetroitThroughGlass event at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. I have to admit: I was blown away. They're much lighter than I expected and I could see them becoming second-nature. So much better than constantly looking at your phone or computer.
Google just unveiled its Glass Development Kit, which will allow developers to create their own apps for Glass. The sky's the limit for this. Imagine social media apps that pop up tweets about a location as you walk by it, or other ways apps can deliver real time information as you go about your everyday lif. Check out some of the examples from CNET's story:
One of the most impressive was a Glassware app called Word Lens, which translates printed words as you look at them and replaces them with words from the target language. [...] The app can take a German warning sign such as, "Bergweg betreten auf eigene Gefahr," and replace the printed words with, "Mountain path enter on own danger," when looking through Glass. The app wasn't perfect, and its developers said that it might not work with smaller fonts, such as those on restaurant menus. But the app clearly showed Glass' potential utility. Other apps demonstrated included AllTheCooks, for hands-free cooking directions and recipe management; Strava's exercise trackers for running and bicycling; the word game Spellista; and GolfSight, which can reveal fairway distances and help you keep score of your golf game as you play.
How do you think technologies like Glass will affect social media and social media marketing? How would you leverage a technology like Glass a social media marketer? I'd love to hear some of your creative ideas!
Comments & Feedback
Google Glass is sure to impact social media and marketing. As technologies continue to become more and more advanced people are going to be more and more dependent on them. This is just a step closer to us always having instant access to our social media pages.
Technology is such an important aspect of everyday life, and as time goes on this will increase significantly. Technologies like Glass do affect social media and social media marketing because it is helping push new advancements in different technologies for the future. This could also create a lot of exposure for Google Glass and takes this technology beyond what already exists.
I can't wait for Google Glass to become a widely available and affordable thing. However, I worry about the intrusiveness of the device. I hope there will be ways to limit how much data and things it collects throughout a day. It will definitely become a highly used social media tool, although I don't know how we can share anymore of our lives than we already have.
As if we didnt' already carry techbology with us everywhere, Google Glass takes that a step further and almost maes it a part of us. This could be great for media marketing due to increased exposure.
Wearable technology is definitely an up and coming trend. I think a technology like Google Glass will definitly increase the popularity of social media and social media marketing. If this technology takes off as fast as it is predicted to, people will be constantly wearing them which opens opportunity to be constantly seeing ads and using social media. Personally, I have heard very mixed reviews on Google Glass. I recently justed watched a review on YouTube and it was very criticized, making the most impressive features seem like they have many flaws. To create more of a leverage for the product, I would look for more positive reviews about the product to post about. It seems like you had a suprising positive experience with the product, so I would look for more people like you, who were impressed, and have them write reviews about the product. Currently, I think there are too many mixed reviews about Google Glass out there for me to feel confident about them becoming as popular as perceived.
I am a little confused, as I have already commented on this blog for my participation last week, but it's the newest one so I'll chime in again.
The latest trends have kind of been going towards wearable technology. With Nike feul bands or the propostion of making a smart phone into a watch, Google Glass seems to be right on trend. These wearable technologies will reinvent social media marketing. Advertising and PR will literally be a part of the person that is viewing it. One thing that has confused me with Google Glass is the potential for it to become very distracting right in the viewers face and if it will cause more harm than good when it comes to that.
With the revalation of the Glass Development Kit, and allowing developers to come up with any kind of app for for google glass opens a door of endless opportunities. Technologies like Glass with allow Social Media Marketing to take place all day every day. It will also allow us to share with friends or family what we are doing during every second of the day (if we choose to share this that is). As a social media marketer I'd leverage my marketing through an app that allows me to display commercials on google glass when someone walks by a store or restaurant that offers a special discount or offer for those that can see it on google glas.

Google Glass has so much potential that we as digital marketers can’t even image yet. This is a good thing, but how do we advertise on Glass? I find it crazy that you could be seeing ads "right in your face" running next to your apps, but is it that different from your smart phone? I see Glass being used by digital marketers heavily first using the apps to run ads similar to what our smart phones are doing today. For example, displaying video ads before you watch a YouTube video.
I think that Google Glass will be groundbreaking when it comes to social media. It will literally be a look into that person's life from their eyes. It will also be a unique way for companies to advertise and market. From here, I think that other companies will follow suite as far as developing new technologies.
I'm a bit confused here as this is the latest blog posting available for me to comment on, however, I commented on this blog post for my participation last week. I am unaware if this was intentional, but after receiving the email stating we needed 2 resources and one blog post, I figured it would be safest to comment on this post again, just to show that I am participating. I have not yet missed any participation points, and would not like to start now. Therefore, please see below for my comment to this blog post --
I've been following Glass very closely as I find the concept extremely interesting. I know I will probably not be able to afford a pair for a long time, however, this doesn't stop me from wanting to learn about them. I personally think the entrance of Glass into the free market will increase social media sharing at a booming rate, if not alarming. I think the amount of sharing will explode simply because of ease and opportunity. Glass seems to be extremely aimed toward those with active and adventurous lifestyles, but honestly, this will not be the main market. Everyone will want a pair; if the price is right. I feel that most people buying Glass over the next few years will only be the ones that can afford it, or don't have proper financial restraints. Social media sites are going to love this because it will increase posts to their site, causing more people to be active on them. If I were these social media channels, I would be bending over backwards to support Glass with each and every update. Due to the fact I have not experienced them, I'm not quite sure how to use them, or how I would use them, but I'm more than excited to try them when I can.
When I first heard about Google Glass I thought that it was not real or that it was another thing you see on facebook that is a prank or spam. But it IS real! And I think that will leave a huge impact on social media because they could be able to integrate everything that we do already right in front of our faces (literally), but I also do think it is a bit weird and I don't know how much I would wear this thing on my face to use social media.
I was surprised to see how much of Google Glass was such a new and innovative concept. I believe that new technologies such as Google Glass will keep on playing such a large role in today's society. Products like Google Glass will change the world of marketing through social media, for example it will translet words right before our eyes! This will expand social media technology even larger and make it more applicable for many people. There are some down falls to this new technology. For example I believe that consumers will be annoyed how easy information is accessed and constant pop ups on every screen. All in all, I think Google Glass is wll be extremely successful not only in every day users but also business workers and owners.
I think that the impact of technologies like Google Glass in affecting social media and media marketing can be compared similarly to that of the iPhone and creation of the App Store. Like you said, the sky is the limit. A new wave of technology is now being ushered in and its full potential has only scratched the surface. I believe that there will be a massive revolution behind the Glasses, resembling the iPhone era, where applications and social media become endless tools for enjoyment and ingenuity. Marketing something so simple, yet so sophisticated should be a breeze!
It's crazy to see that things like this are being implemented. It is stuff like Google Glass that make you wonder about the things are future holds. It would definitely be cool to be able to try Google Glass out for myself. I think something like Glass can be beneficial for companies. It is definitely something that can be helpful when promoting companies. Everything is there, right in front of your eyes.
Google Glass is a very revolutionary innovation and I think that such concepts will continue to play a large role in the world of technology. Technologies like Glass will affect social media and social media marketing in a variety of ways. Things will be more instantaneous; instead of having to pull out your computer or phone, you can look through lenses to obtain information. Also, as you walk by things or people, the glass may be able to pick them up. It is a wild concept that I personally think will thrive in our society someday. A social media marketer might be able to leverage Glass through having interaction with people also using the Glass lenses.
Google Glass is a very innovative and break through idea but i don't think the world is ready for technology like this anytime soon. Our society is constantly trying to think of new technologies and innovations. This is awesome to a certain point. The world is so much different now then it was 30 years ago. There are so many security threats and things of this nature that threaten society. We need to learn how to fight these before we can start making glass computes. I personally don’t need my phone on my glasses. I like to live in the moment and ill check my phone when I am free not when my phone wants me to check it. It is a great idea but I think we should come back to it in 100 years.
Google Glass seems cool and innovative but don't know if it will catch on. I'm sure they are very expensive and could be hard to access but some people will absolutely go for it. It could get annoying with the constant updates that could be unnecessary and unimportant, but some could be beneficial. It also makes things too easy and accessible and make people lazy.
I think the development of Google Glass will have numerous purposes for us in the future once they fully lock down everything they want to accomplish with it. The fact that it can translate words literally right before your eyes is remarkable and incredibly useful when traveling abroad for example in a new area. Not only can it translate for you, but I assume it can provide directions, and with the social media aspect of it, give recommendations for things to do. I think Google Glass will help social media expand even more than it already has, with the fact that it can be constantly in front of you instead of pulling out your phone whenever you want to check an app etc. However, I think some users may be annoyed with just HOW easily accessable it is, with the constant updates popping up and being flashed before your eyes. However, for those in the social media business, it is very useful to have a stream like that in front of you, and I think it will really help expand the social media market. I'm anxious to try out Google Glass for myself and see what types of uses I may have for it!
I think this is a really cool creation, I wish I can get the chance to try the real Google Glass. It is like the magic thing only existing in movie or cartoon. Imaging that the glass could replacing the mobile, and other digital formula, and it basically can scan everything around and providing towns of information you need. Personally, if Google glass is not super expensive, I’m thinking about getting one when it goes public. However, the problem is wearing glasses might be an issue for many, cause I’ve never tried the real Google class, so not sure how it feels like by wearing it all day long. And also, if the Google glass is too “smart”, there could be some privacy issues, like what if Google glass video tapped people without notifications. But things like Google glass will definitely bringing so much fun to life, especially on social media. If there’s no new functions on social media, people might getting tired of using it, but bringing new technology like Google glass is delivering new ideas and ways in connecting and communicating others around, feeling exiting for this in the market.
What an awesome opportunity to try out such an awesome piece of new technology! I would love to be able to test out Google Class as well someday. I can see Glass affecting social media in a massive way. Before Glass, social media consumers would have to log onto their social media sits using their phone or computer, but now with Glass they will have access to these sites without even having to use their fingers. Glass will make mobile media even more mobile. Imagine being able to walk down the street and have a message from a friend on Facebook pop up right before your eyes, and then being able to respond without even having to move your fingers. I can also see how Glass will be extremely beneficial to marketers. They will be able to have advertisements and special deals pop up on Glass when someone wearing it simply walks by a certain store. Glass gives people much easier access to their social media needs and also provides easier access to information about products, stores, brands, etc. Once Glass becomes fully available to the public I can see wearable technology quickly replacing handheld devices and computers.
First off, it is amazing that you were given the opportunity to try on and give the google glass a test run (am very jealous). Secondly, I am not necessarily saying that everyone on the planet will be sporting one, similarly to the iphone's cult following, but I do see its app technology being the next big wave hitting the social media/communications industry. I am not very familiar with the technical details of the product as well as the app technology being developed, but I do believe the content created for google glass will greatly effect how people communicate with one another. Like you said, these changes will force companies to be more creative in their digital marketing efforts in order to capture their audience and build a relationship with them. I believe with these new advances the art of relationship building will be more real-time and intimate. Consumers will be able to real time share their experiences, with greater ease, with their networks. With that said, for me personally I think google glass would be beneficial for the shopping experience by meshing the digital with reality. Customers may be able to wear the glass when going through a department store and see prices and reviews as they hover over products, also clothing items could just be placed upon your body without actually trying them on. The opportunities are endless, and can't wait to see what happens in the next decade.
Its amazing to think that one day all of our information will be held on something like glasses instead of a cell phone. Being able to take pictures using our glasses is something that it hard to even image. Will advertisements come right up on our google glass screen?
The Google Glass sounds really cool! I’d love to try it out. I think that if it catches on, it will make social media much easier to access because it will be hands-free and people can be connected all the time. This of course will make it easier for social media marketing to reach the users because users are being exposed to the social media more. As a social media marketer, I would leverage Google Glass by creating apps or ads for the company that utilizes cool features of the Google Glass. I don’t have any really specific ideas because I don’t completely understand all of the technical parts of the Glass, but I look forward to seeing what develops in the future.
I think Google Glass will have a great impact on social media and social media marketing. For example, Twitter and Facebook have an easy way to make an app that allows people to post photos, status, etc. hands free. Google Glass also gives marketers the opportunity to advertise and drive sales. An app that people can use while shopping that works with GPS to give them special deals as they walk into a store would be very cool and practical! I am excited to see the future of Google Glass and I have no doubt that it will only increase the usage of online media.
I believe that the wearable technologies like Glass or Watch will affect strongly on social media and social media marketing. Smart-phone was introduced about 4 years ago, and the technology is now devloped by one more step. Wearable technology is enough to give customers a hugh interest. This technology can provide a differentiated service compared to the portable technology such as smart phones. Wearable technology can find easier in our daily life compared to the portable technology. Glasses or watches are the stuffs that people are more willing to use than the portable products such as smart phones or tablet pc. The social media marketer should emphasize that idea which is wearalbe technology can find easier in our daily life compared to the portable techonlogy. This also will help social media to come closer to our daily life.
As another social media outlet, Glass provides marketers and social media managers with an additional avenue to connect with consumers. Given the early stage of its product life cycle, social media marketers would be wise to use Glass to reach the tech savvy market. These early adopters (and typically influencers) are an advantageous market to target with other new technology items and apps. Additionally, with the flexibility of its use, social media marketing on Glass is a great way to share retail discounts or specials based on a user’s location and established preferences.
Furthermore, Glass provides another genre of app creation geared towards the active technology user. The hands-free mobile technology provides a whole new world of apps for this specific market. As an avid cyclist, I would love to see an app that generated a map of existing bike lanes based on a rider’s location. The app would also provide directions for commuting cyclists. Just like Google Maps, but for bike lanes with the directions displayed on Glass as opposed to having to look down at a phone while cycling, which can be dangerous.
I think Google Glass is very revolutionary. It has the capability to do many innovative things. I think all the new apps such as Glassware are creating many strides in the world of social media. There will be definitely be a market for Google Glass with the hands free accessibility of it. People are always looking for the next best thing and Google Glass will allow them something that will show them use and create meaning to their lives. This is something that will change the way people view technology.
I think this glasses are the future. I relate them to me watching a movie about the future and I see all of this people wearing weird glasses or a watch that they can talk to. I think this is a great advantage in every kind in technology, the fact that you won't have to use your hand to communicate, not even hold your hand is great. Been able to receive your notifications without having to look at your phone and answering just by saying a couple of words is something I never thought it would be real. The apps can go crazy on this aspect. We could see an app that when you look at someone it could tell you where they bought all their clothes. It could take a picture of what you are looking at the oment just by your voice command and paste it in any social media that you want. I definitely see this glasses been part of a people every day basis.
I think the real reason for the hip of the Google Glasses is that it liberate your hands! Hands are tools, but in the new media age, hands are more like a slave kidnapped to slide and click. WIth Google Glasses, people can realize ultimate multi-task: to interpret the instruction and difficult calculations in real time while operating accordingly. Google Glasses are new and apps are in the germinating time, but I believe they will cooperate very well.
I think the idea and creation of Google Glass is really innovative and future forward. That being said, I think it may be a little too futuristic for most people. Google Glass may not be for everyone. I believe there could definiltey be a market for it with certain people, maybe very future-forward, technology based businesses, but not the everyday person. Maybe someday it could be marketed for the everyday person, but not yet.
Personally, I think Google Glass is awesome because this kind of wearable technology will is an innovation that allow people actually see the information overlap on the reality. However, I do not think Google Glass will potentially affect social media and social media marketing. The reason why social media is blooming via the mobile platform is that, for example, smartphone is treated as somehow a part of our body. Just image the feeling you forgot your phone at home for the whole day, especially now smartphones gradually integrate different functions. While for this point, wearable devices can never compete with mobile devices, especially smartphones. Therefore, I think, in the aspect of social media, the value of Google Glass is limited. But I do reckon Google Glass can be used in certain on-set marketing campaign for visual effect impact.
I had the opportunity to work with glass over the summer. I personally think that it is really innovative but has a lot of flaws. I don't think that glass will be as big as the smartphone or tablet. When it comes to social media and social media marketing I think that glass will do well. People will be able to see your ads right on their faces. A tactic I would use for marketing with glass is when you walk into a store, the glasses will automatically bring up the stores website or play a promotional video. It would kind of work like a QR code, if you look at a certain thing in the store it will trigger the glasses to bring up the website.
I do think there are some setbacks with the Google Glass. As cool as it is, I head that an engineer who was testing the Google Glass got into a huge car accident when wearing the glasses since they are not great for visibility beyond the glasses which can be concerning. As for how it will affect social media and social media marketing, I think in ten years this will be the new iPhone that everyone will have to have. So instead of marketing everything through the iPhone it will be marketed through Google Glass. I think one thing that I would definitely do as a marketing campaign is to create videos that showcase what it is like to look through the glasses, and how they work possibly displaying some of the apps in the video. This would help consumers see how beneficial the glasses are; thus, making them want to buy the glasses.
Technologies like glass will improve social media and the overall experience. social media marketing will most likely grow with the use of these products. Many ads will be implemented into the glass and the product will be a walking advertisement. Many creative aps will be made and will be sold to the public. Overall the product will be a success, but most likely be so expensive at first most people will not buy the glass. If the product is deemed useful, everyone will be wanting to own this product.
I must say it was a blessing for you to have a chance to sample the Google glass. Ever since I have read about Google glass, it has not been possible for to really paint an imagination of how it exactly works. The technology is just awesome to the effect that it’s very hard to understand for those who had never experienced it. My online research indicates that the Google Glasses will be sold to the public next year. At the moment, only a few customers can purchase them through application. The glasses are said to be very expensive. As a result, I don’t think they will have a huge influence on social networks. I think social networks are still in their early evolving stage. Therefore they still have a long way to go. But with technology anything can be possible. We might witness a sudden decline in social networks through the introduction of google glass with apps that might perform better functions than the one being offered but the current social media.
I do not think Google Glass will affect social media as of right now because it would be too expensive for most people and there is not a lot of them out there. However, I believe once it take off it will affect social media greatly. Maybe in the future we will not even need our phones and it will be replaced by Google Glass. This technology amazes me and I hope I can try it out one day. I think Google Glass will speak for itself when it comes to marketers. The technology has nothing of its kind so of course everyone will eventually want it!
I think the Google glass is amazing, it is one of the most innovitive products right now. I believe such a product will bring some impacts on social media and social media marketing, but it still need take some time for the public to accept and learn how to use this kind of innovitive products. It is so cool but not everyone would like to buy one and use it.
As of right now, I don't think Google Glass will affect social media and social media marketing. It's too expensive for the average person to buy. Unless the price comes down, I can't see anyone in the middle class buying it. That limits their target market to rich people who like trying new things, a very small market. Even if I did have money to buy it, I don't even know where to buy it from? I've never actually seen one. Not much is known about Google Glass and I think the unknown is really hurting them. Eventually I think that Google Glass could change our world as it currently is, into something you may see on the Jetsons, but the technology needs to be more available to those who want to buy it.
I think the Google Glass will have a great impact on social media marketing, the first step is to change our traditonal way of using social media. I really like the idea that I will know anything update of my friends online through the "glasses" without checking cellphone and waiting for notifications come. This wearable technology will definitely helps people connect more tightly with each other on social meida network. I guess it will also have a dramatically impact on video game market.
I think all new technology in the scope of social media and online connectivity is attempting to get the user as connected as possible with all their social media profiles, while still maintianing ease of use to appeal to the masses. Something like Google Glass obviously has a more limited demographic than some, due to price and functionality standpoints, but it is definitely a step in a new direction in terms of integrating your social media activity in everyday life.
Augmented reality products such as Google Glass with other Apple iGlass is about to hit the market. Software and hardware integration are applications linking augmented reality together with remotely controlled devices and considered to be one of the top augmented reality trends in 2013 that will take off in the near future. There has been some barriers and challenges concerning smart phone augmented reality are GPS, tracking, connectivity, and software. However, big brands like Google, Qualcomm, Canon, and Hewlett-Packard have been already researching and developing the technology and they are about to enter the game.
I believe that glass technolodgy has huge potential. we can see how social media has been impacted from technologies such as Iphones, tablets and other gadgets. people like new things and with Google glass in the market social media marketing will be greatly affected. as you have mentioned in the blog post about stories on CNET it is very much likely that Glass's potential is unimaginable. We will just have to wait until the Google Glass takes off in market to see its real impact across different businesses including social media & marketing.
Google Glass could revolutionize social media in ways unimaginable. But, only if implimented properly. Google glass seems like its a bit pricey. The average person may not be able to or even want to spend $600 on a pair of glasses when they have a mobile device already that has similar functionality. If enough people can actually own a pair of Google Glasses then social media will inevitably change. I can already imagine people randomly laughing in public sparking questions like "What are you laughing about" and getting responses like "oh I'm looking at this funny tweet that just popped up on my glasses, what was it you were saying?" I can also see people recording things without others knowing. Secrets will be exposed.
I think that technologies like glass will only make social media grow becasue it gives people yet another way to access their profiles and feeds. In turn will also stimulate social media marketing because it is making social media more accessble. It really only makes sense. Social media marketing does great as long as people are using social media, but once social media is obstructing their vision, and their for different ads are obstructing their vision people will begin to pay more attention. I also predict that in a world where everyone is wearing google glasses hospitals will begin buying more ad space and will become much more commercialized.
.................................I just receivd the invitation letter with code from google...........I.....really need an advice that should I buy it or not....It cost $1500....it gonna kill me if I click the purchase bottom...........I know lots of information about it and I am a big fan of this project....but the price..............omg,,,,,,
I think technologies like Glass are incredible and they will have a huge impact on social media and social media marketing. It will most likely make it more fun to use social media and even easier. There are endless opportunities for expansion with glass and marketing could eventually come into play, but at first it may be hurt. I would leverage a technology like Glass as the next thing. People will eventually start buying them all the time and it eventually become the norm. It will be easy to market as the next generation changing product. There is nothing like it and it will change a lot.
I think that the sky is the limited with technology now-a-days. Google Glass is such an awesome new form of technology that it quite incredible. The things that it can do, in such a little lens is insane. I think that Google Glass will influence social media by making it even more accessible. Instead of having to pull out your phone to check Twitter its right in your vision whenever you choose. Marketers who use social media will have their ads go directly to the eyes of the consumer. It would be interesting for people to create and app where the Google Glass takes your location and instantly shows you advertisements for surrounding businesses. As the Google Glass wearer walks past a business and an ad will instantly pop up, thus sparking the consumers interest and then they would go into the business. Like I said, the sky is limit with this new technology.
As I am a student who learn about digital, Google Glass is a featured product to show how digital market has been developing in these days. Now, social media and social media marketing have a great influence not only on on-line but also on off-line. And this technology can be an example. As social media takes a place greatly in marketing and business area, we can have more chances how to use social media more effectively and successfully.
