Last week, I had the opportunity to try Google Glass for the first time at the #DetroitThroughGlass event at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. I have to admit: I was blown away. They're much lighter than I expected and I could see them becoming second-nature. So much better than constantly looking at your phone or computer.
Google just unveiled its Glass Development Kit, which will allow developers to create their own apps for Glass. The sky's the limit for this. Imagine social media apps that pop up tweets about a location as you walk by it, or other ways apps can deliver real time information as you go about your everyday lif. Check out some of the examples from CNET's story:
One of the most impressive was a Glassware app called Word Lens, which translates printed words as you look at them and replaces them with words from the target language. [...] The app can take a German warning sign such as, "Bergweg betreten auf eigene Gefahr," and replace the printed words with, "Mountain path enter on own danger," when looking through Glass. The app wasn't perfect, and its developers said that it might not work with smaller fonts, such as those on restaurant menus. But the app clearly showed Glass' potential utility. Other apps demonstrated included AllTheCooks, for hands-free cooking directions and recipe management; Strava's exercise trackers for running and bicycling; the word game Spellista; and GolfSight, which can reveal fairway distances and help you keep score of your golf game as you play.
How do you think technologies like Glass will affect social media and social media marketing? How would you leverage a technology like Glass a social media marketer? I'd love to hear some of your creative ideas!
Comments & Feedback
The Google Glass and other technologies will enhance social media and social media marketing I believe because it makes it easier to access social media sites and people will use them more often. If people can develop their own apps for the Glass, this will help social media marketing because people can view specific items that they want to and companies can spread their brand or item by exposing it more often through marketing it on the Glass. I would leverage the Glass a social media marketer by highlighting the fact that it is hands-free, lightweight, and you can easily access any information you might need through this one device. I would focus on the specific things this device can do compared to other technological devices to make this seem more appealing. The Glass seems really cool and I would like to try it out some day!
I think so far what Google Glass represent is innovative and extraordinary technology. It may change the world in the future. The real-time word translation app for Google Glass seems a start. In my opinion, the crucial part for developing Google Glass is to maximally utilize the potential functions of Google Glass. Developers should make more useful apps. Like smartphones, at the beginning, not everyone thought smartphone is necessary because they have mp3 or cameras or other game playing kits. But soon after they turned down their ideas due to the emergence of countless apps covering every part of daily life. If Google Glass want to be a success, Glass should bring enough benefits to persuade users to change their life.
I think that technologies like Glass will change a lot about social media. I think it will become even more user-friendly and more automatic. As discussed in the blog, I think there ill be more location based apps. Apps to make life easier. One great app would be for bus routes. To see where the bus is and how long you have until it gets to your stop. Also, alerts from your calender for appointments, and driving directions.
I think that Google glass is a cool idea- however it is not very practical. It is extremely expensive and no one really wants to wear ugly glasses on their faces. I am not sure I would ever try to promote this- however if I did, I would have to market it to a higher income target market. I think wearable technology is kind of not going to catch on. I mean- it may be cool for something as an extra toy to play with but I don't think it will ever be an essential in someone's mandatory technology.
I think that Google Glass will be a revolutionary way for social media to be more direct in our lives. With twitter and facebook already in our phones, having another link to them could be an added benefit in case of a phone dying or it being lost. I believe that businesses could overstretch their limit though and if I am in a populated area I don't want to be bombarded by advertisements everywhere I look. I think it has the potential to be a great device but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned into something annoying.
I think initially social media won't be affect too much by technologies like Glass. That is mainly because of the cost and availability for the every day user. The nice thing about social media accounts are that they are available for free and on multiple mediums. I don't think Glass will create a need to change social media formatting immediately. However, when the changes do come about I think it will be really excited for an increase of information and if they can incorporate other technologies into Glass like a camera, the sky is really the limit with personal apps that show the world what you see. The only app that I don't really see working with Glass would be gaming apps since there are no controls. I would mainly leverage Glass to provide more information conveniently for you every day and letting the world see what you see.
I like the idea of Google Glass simply because it is so futuristic. Ten years ago we barely had flip phones and now we have a computer you can wear as glasses. It will definitely change the game when it comes to social media. Instead of having to load an app from your phone you can just put it right in front of your eyes. It will take a few years to iron everything out in terms of bugs and stuff, but when that happens, social media will get a bog boost.
Technology is an amazing thing, Glass is another product Google can gloat about. The social media aspect is interesting, tweets popping up or reviews from places nearby seems to me like an information overload. If I am interested in a particular place, I can take the 30 seconds to ask Siri (....we are spoiled). But the opportunity for Glass is what is the most amazing, translating languages instantly....impressive. This also adds to the potential problem of people not taking the time to actually learn anything themselves, the process of learning a language is beneficial for your brain. Technologies like this make it easy to be ignorant to whats around you before you are actually there (ignoring all culture because you know you have your handy dandy Glass). Glass could definitely make some tasks easier, like hands free cooking, but also contribute to our media immersion. Use with caution I suppose.
I worked with Motorola Solutions the last two years and they had a similar product like GoogleGlass however, it was more marketed for Police and Firefighters. Nonetheless I got to try them and test them out and they were very neat and innovative. I thought to myself if Google does in fact come out with these for cosumer purposes then we would be on a whole new level of technology. The possibilies would be endless and it would really make us feel as if we were now being futuristic. The hands free element is great and allows consumers to balance everyday life with your social media outlets. I do think that many companies and leverge their applications on this new eyewear in order to take their ideas to the next level. If successful it could without a doubt change the way we use technology today. Offering better solutions, quicker responses, and reduced errors it could become the foundation of the future. I can see it taking off and then becoming so big that it changes its design to have a better appeal and so on and so forth. 10 years from now we all could be wearing glasses and have them be designed differently. I know many people will be advocating for Gucci Google Glass. That does have a nice ring to it though!
I've been following Glass very closely as I find the concept extremely interesting. I know I will probably not be able to afford a pair for a long time, however, this doesn't stop me from wanting to learn about them. I personally think the entrance of Glass into the free market will increase social media sharing at a booming rate, if not alarming. I think the amount of sharing will explode simply because of ease and opportunity. Glass seems to be extremely aimed toward those with active and adventurous lifestyles, but honestly, this will not be the main market. Everyone will want a pair; if the price is right. I feel that most people buying Glass over the next few years will only be the ones that can afford it, or don't have proper financial restraints. Social media sites are going to love this because it will increase posts to their site, causing more people to be active on them. If I were these social media channels, I would be bending over backwards to support Glass with each and every update. Due to the fact I have not experienced them, I'm not quite sure how to use them, or how I would use them, but I'm more than excited to try them when I can.
Not having any experience with the Google Glass myself, I wonder about its capabilities to accommodate users who wear glasses, potentially with high prescriptions, as well as users who suffer from migraines. Ultimately, I think that the best uses of social media and Google Glass will depend on the demographics of Glass users. If Glass users are primarily men, then there’s little use in trying to launch a Pinterest campaign for Glass, unless the goal of the campaign is to create interest in Glass among women, the primary users of Pinterest. Then, you could create an app where people could pin anything they see in real life directly from the Glass to a Pinterest board; in that case, I could see Glass being an important tool to get people out in the real world rather than sitting at home behind their computer screens. Glass could also be useful in conjunction with YouTube channels because users can take video from a first-person perspective as they do exciting things (although this may lose popularity after the first time you drop your Glass in the water while parasailing?); watching such first-person perspective videos from YouTube on Glass could also be exciting for users.
I think that Google Glass is very cool and has opened new doors for the future of apps, advertising and even social media. I don't think that this is something that will become popular anytime soon though because of the pricetag on it. And as for advertising and social media, it definitely has a cool future for those. It is a new way to experience everything. However, I don't think that Google Glass will effect social media and marketing a lot. It will create new ways to do these things, but it can only help it in my opinion.
I am very interested in Google Glass. The updates on todays social media when it comes to advertising is mind blowing. Google glass plays a major role in social media, considering all the benefits it raises. This is one of the new benefits of technology and it helps social media in the fact that it raises more paths for consumers. By using Google glass, it just raises more awareness and makes the world of social media are more enjoyable and majo enviorment in the advertising world. Google glass makes social media easier for consumers to particpate in and just another door that is open. I can see this being something that I incorporate with my everyday life.
Wow sounds like Google Glass is very cool, and I am quite jealous you got to use it! This technology seems very cool and while it is in the infancy stage, this technology has great growth potential. As is, most people will view the Google Glass as a fun and interesting gadget with minimal real life use. Having said that, I think this technology will revolutionize the social media world. Just the view examples presented in the article give me enough hope, with improvements, that this will turn into the "next big thing".
This sounds incredible! Google glass seems like some of the coolest type of technology I have ever seen...it makes me feel like Marty McFly. I can't believe that google has created such an awesome app. I am really jealous you go to try it and I wish could. I think it will affect social media by making it even more addicting and you could have internet marketing literally everywhere...its amazing.
I think that Google Glass is something that will be some what popular at first, but I do not think it will last long. I've already seen with my friend group, how we're always on our phones is starting to get extremely annoying and rude. I think that the glass will only increase the amount of attachment we have with technology. Although this is an incredible invention I do not find it necessary or something consumers would use in their everyday lives.
Google glass would definitely be the next big trend! I've heard it long time ago since the idea was out. Now the actual product was successfully produced. Google glass is a very useful tool to make people interact with high technologies. Social media could be a strong link in the process. As it says, the users could create their own app. I believe the social media app could be customized for every user. People could use Facebook, Twitter or other social apps maybe by gestures or voice demands. However, one thing I concerned is the comfort and safety problem of the glass. Would people focus more on the content of the glass while walking? Also, how about the short-sighted people who already wear glasses? How to solve the vision problem? It still need lots of improvement I think.
Glass has its obvious benefits when it comes to social media. But, i can se how this would get annoying as you would constantly see what your friends/peers are doing. It will support the annoying over sharing problem that we see with social media sites right now. However, Glass opens creates opportunity to personalize consumer experience. One thing I think would be cool to integrate into the Glass software – suppose you walk into a store, the app will notify the store and will be able to pop up the sales they have and will be able to greet you and ask if you have any questions without a word being said.
Google glass has played an interest to me after reading the article. Google glass implements social media and various new features to get people intrigued and using different outlets. The advancements in new technology are amazing to me! Applications like Google Glass is just the beginning because I feel like more and more people will start using it because how accessible it makes social media. I hope one day I will own Google Glass!
Google glass would be very beneficial for social media. It allows social media to add new features and keep people interested. There are obviously an amazing amount of things technology will offer is in the near future and I imagine google glass will only be the beginning. Social media can offer advertisements, and comments about restaurants and stores. Listing things friends and family have said about it, or what the general publiv believes. It's also a way store could broadcast sales. It could compare prices, locations etc. Social media will gain a lot of advertising opportunities thanks to these types of technologies. They could also expand the relationship experience. Also since Google glass is a new type of technology there are a lot of ideas that haven't been thought of yet, that will make people want it even more. After social media creators, developers, and managers see that options are unlimited they will want to be a part of the new technology.
Part of me is very intrigued by Google Glass. I'm amazed at what people are creating with the recent advancements in technology. I know I'll end up using it later in life. My only concern is this will be another form of technology that will partially take us away from the world and give others one more reason to consider us as the "technology generation."
I think in the future wearable technology and the google glass will be in peoples everyday wardrobes. By pairing up with your main device, and not having to pull out your mobile device this wearable techonology can really come in handy. The app that was talked about in this blog is something that you can only dream of 5 years ago, and can really bring global markets together. Leveraging this device could be showing the things that the technology could do, like that app, or taking pictures ect.
Google Glass is a major innovation that I can see easily becoming a major part of everyday life. It creates an accessibility to social media and technology that hasn't been reached by smart phones. We all were able to observe how the effect of phones has changed the entire way the world of social media works, Google Glass is just going to amplify that. This is going to be a digital marketer's dream. The ads are guaranteed to be placed right in front of the consumer's face, making it hard to ignore. The reach compnies will be able to make is going to be a gold mine.
Google Glass is the next new big thing! I thought it was crazy how some people can create something like this for Social Media. Ths is a great way to look at your social media like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Google, etc hands free without any inconvenience. I know one day i would love to own something like that to make my world so much easier.
Google Glass certainly seems like a technology of the future; something we have seen in James Bond or Spy Kids movies (age-depending). Although the recreational uses seem to be limitless, the marketing uses are still to be determined. Companies could utilize this technology to send advertisements to target individuals who are in the area of certain places. However, this is also a question of how open Google Glass decides to be. Will they allow anyone to broadcast onto the screen? Most likely not. Personally, I see it following the same trend as cell phones: individuals will have the ability to sign up for certain updates and only recieve those limited messages. For example, since I enjoy going to the store Forever 21, they could send me messages about deals or locations when I'm in the area.
Today, a variety of technologies has been developed in various forms, and we can see and use these technologies, which make our life more convenient and valuable. Google Glass can be a great example of the technologies that follow the current trend most. As Google Glass came up to the world, people can develop mobile contents and social media to expand the rold of Google Glass. I think people are not going to buy the glass for using new apps, but I am sure that people who bought the glass would download the apps. Therefore, various apps and social media can be created through this technology.
Glass is the next step in technology. Being able to record hands-free, take a pictures, and having the ability to share what you see live opens up a wide range of opportunities. Google glass will make social media much more accessible. This also gives social media marketers the ability to advertise their products using Google Glass. Stores will have a new way of bringing in traffic to their stores by using Google Glass leading the customers on what they want to buy. Not only to marketers have an advantage of allowing customers to see first-hands experience on their products, but customers have the ability of being able to walk in the store and having Google Glass help compare and contrast several products you might be looking at or the special discounts that might be happening. As far as what social media marketers and social media can do to leverage a technology like Glass the sky is the limit.
This is amazing, and I really wish I can have the google glass someday. I can solve lot of problems in my life, and I can enjoy a convenient lifestyle. I have admitedd the technique really change human life, because people can look everything they are interested in just with one google glass. The product is fashionable, and you can make a call when you surf the internet in your glass. You will be popular in public, because people are attracted by your google google. Try to introduce the detail to them, and you will make more friends.
Google Glass is the next step in technology! The hands free capabilities it offers are easy to use as well as provide access to infinite information in a simpler way. Google Glass would make connecting to web and social media that much more accessible. Social media marketing would be able to tap into those applications that would be used on Google Glass. A way to leverage Glass to a social media marketer, is that Glass technology would increase the exposure to marketing media with users constantly exposed to such as they use the product.
Personally I love the idea of having everything at your exposure in a light stylish frame. The price of the product is quite lofty but for something with such capabilities it sort of makes sense. What will they think of next?!
This little device is one of the most interesting creature of human made in a decade. This device might affect huge changes for social media and marketing. Since, this little piece can constantly showing social media and advertising stuff through the glass and we do not have to use our phone to upload pictures and things like anything related with any social media.
The first thought that comes to mind is that these seem awesome. The second is that it seems like a way to make people even more antisocial. Now social media will literally be able to be right in your face. People will be able to walk into a store and get almost all the information they want right away. Stores will have a new way to attract people into their stores and lead customers right to what they want them to buy. You walk into a store and bam right away you can see what deals they have and the glasses could lead you directly to the product. I think the current advertising they are doing on them are great! They have someone wearing the glasses and showing all the new and cool things you can do with them. This is how I would advertise the glasses. I would want to give people a reason to want to purchase them by showing them why they need to have them. Social media marketers and can post all the cool things that they can do with them on their social media sites. I would pay for a Twitter advertisement and make sure the tweet is interesting enough to get people to want to click and watch a video of the glasses in action. I would probably say something along the lines of, check out the revolutionary Google Glass to experience the new world of what technology can do today.
I think Google Glass is one of the most impressive pieces of technology that has been released in the past decade. I appreciate the innovation and genius behind it, but I do think it is a bit intrusive on human interaction. I have no room to talk since my phone is basically a part of my body and I am constantly on it, but I have been told numerous times I am too attached to technology and I agree. Google Glass is an absolutely amazing product for the millennials. Millennials are known for being reliant on technology and exploring more of the world than any other generation has done. I think this would be an amazing and convenient piece of technology to bring abroad, can you imagine how easy traveling would be with Google Glass? If I were able to buy Google Glass I would absolutely have it. I am all for technology making life easier on me and I think I would explore things outside of my comfort zone knowing I had the product to help me out along the way.
I think the idea of google glass is too much. I dont think we need anything else attaching us to our smartphones any more. I have the same feeling about Google Glass as I do about smart watchs. Were becoming to attached to our electronics and I really think it needs to cease. I can understand that it has many uses and im sure will revolutionize the social media world but I dont think its a necessary. I like the idea of using it to translate signs and such things, and also hands free cooking without having to look back at the recipe. But are those really things we need to take short cuts too? I think not.
Google Glass sounds like an extremely innovative piece of technology! I remember the first time someone told me about Google Glass, I burst out laughing and said that it would never catch on. I feel like it is something you need to see to believe. However, the door is open for this kind of technology to completely change the way we think about marketing. Social media could become more quickly available because of things like Google Glass. The feature of changing languages and translating them for you is something I would never even think of, but that could be very useful! The potential for new apps is where I think Google Glass could capitalize the most. They way information is displayed through the Glass itself creates the potential for thousands of new apps that would not work on a tablet. I personally am very excited to see what happens as Google Glass becomes more of a household item, and I would love to try one myself.
I think Google Glasses sound like they have a lot of pontential. While I'm not completely sold on the idea, I think with more development and contributing apps they could be even more amazing. I think they will contribute to social media by allowing faster photo and video uploads, and have the potential to add people on social media sites (like facebook) with facial recognition software. I also think they would be cool for recognizing products you want to buy in a store and finding them for the best deal online or at another store nearby. That way consumers can find the best rates for the things they want to buy. I think the potential for Google Glasses is sky high, and I'm interested to see what more developers come up with.
It is hard for me to imagine Google Glass becoming the most revolutionary thing for social media marketing. To be honest, I think that mobile will continue to contribute the same amount, if not more, to social media marketing success. People already view their phone as if it is an extension of their own bodies! Although, I'm sure once I actually try Google Glass I will be more inspired with all of its potential and future capabilities.
I have mixed feelings about Googl Glass. On one hand, I think they definitely have a place in the professional world, you could give a presentation on UStream to group of international people or livestream an important/exclusive event so that consumers, partners and others who cannot attend can still take part. I also think they would be helpful when traveling to new/foreign places like you mentioned in your post. On the otherhand, I think they are a bit invasive. We already look at our phones all the time, why should we put the technology in our direct line of vision? Making it even more imposible to have a real conversation. I've tried out the Google Glass and while I think they're interesting and can see a use of them - they still a. look ridiculous b. make you look cross eyed because you're looking at the display and c. you look unapproachable. Real person to person interaction will even be more difficult, it's a step above the guy who never takes his bluetooth out.
Google Glass is an amazing piece of wearable tech that everyone wants to try. Glass is a current symbol of the future of tech and our society. It also makes it incredibly simple and fast to do anything you would be able to do with your phone.
One thing I could see Glass doing is recomending locations based on social media reviews. This would make it essential for businesses to encourage their customers to recommend their product(s) and/or service(s) over social media. Those reviews would be invaluable if recommendations were made from Glass.
In my opinion, google glass is too far. In todays world, kids rarley even look at you when you talk to them since they are so immersed in their phone. Now they will constantly have something on their face. I think that Glass should be used in the workplace, or with the government. I do not think it should be used for leisure, or available to the public. But other than that, it is a very cool and innovative product. This definitaly is a step into the future.
I think that Glass has the potential to change everything! Imagine if every restaurant you walked by popped up with reviews, stores with sales or discounts, and movie theaters with show times. People could have their texts displayed while driving or going for a run. I think that it also opens up big potential for advertisements. Whle wearing them, walking by certain stores or places could trigger different ads to pop up. Overall I think the technology is very cool. I'm interested to see what the price would be because it does seem like it could be expensive. If people all over the world had technology like Glass, you could instantly get an idea around the world by broadcasting through Glass. People will be more connected and use it to stay in touch. Social media already connects us to one another constantly and this would just solidify that. We would all be connected in new ways with Glass!
It almost seems like a video game its that cool. Social media may be affected depending on the price of this technology, I'm guessing Glass isn't something that is going to come cheap. It is a very cool idea but I am concerend with how the social market is going to find consumers due to high pricing. Do not get me wrong people will buy it if the product is worth it just as apple products took off. Even if they are a huge development or break through I feel they are as unsafe as cell phones. Is the government going to have to make a rule no Glass wear and driving like they did cell phones. But a great way to leverage this technology through social media is to get people interested by offering deals they can't beat or making it a competition someone how, like first 20,000 people to come in to our stores and purchase our Glass wear will recieve some sort of deal.
In my opinion, the Google glass will change all over the world. This is fresh and interesting for everyone, especially for young people. Google Glass can make our life more variety and more convenience. To begin with, social media is not popular for people, but now, almost people can get the benefit from social media. The app can take a German warning sign such as, "Bergweg betreten auf eigene Gefahr," and replace the printed words with, "Mountain path enter on own danger," when looking through Glass. That is for people safe and can trust the product, this will attract more consumers. There are different function can easy on different social media marketing. This is a good beginning for digital marketing and social media business.
In my opinion, the primary thing that will change in social media is that we will see much more short video and pictures uploaded in social media platforms, like Google+, Facebook or Twitter. It seems to be just too easy to take a video or picture of your sight field and upload it to show to your friends what you see. In addition, I'd say the location services, like checking in into places and tell friends where you are, will also increase on social media platforms. This in turn, will be a good opportunity to improve the individual targeting of advertising based on the locations a social media user is located.
Google Glass has the potential to do revolutionary things. This will take over the way people use their cell phones now and other technologies. Technologies such as Google Glass will affect social media now and in the future. It will allow social media to become more interactive and allow endless possibilities. This new product will allow easier accessibility for everyday tasks and make things more convenient. This product being marketed right to the public will allow great potential. Google Glass could have the ability to give promotional items to people at different stores or allow various people to gain benefits. This new product will be revolutionary and successful.
Google Glass sounds like it will be revolutionary. Not only will it save people from the increasingly common "text neck," which is a neck issue that is happening from staring down at phone, computer, and tablet screens all the time, but it will also allow for some fresh and unique social media and social media marketing techniques. Google Glass would be an awesome way to do Foursquare. You can check into places by simply looking at them. It also could allow you to take pictures by just looking at something, which would be really cool for Instagram. As far as social media marketing goes, I feel like Google Glass would allow for marketers to never miss a beat. Everything you look at, something could pop up right in front of your eyes. Of course, I think that overtime people would become desensitized to these ads just like we have the habit of scrolling through Twitter's promoted tweets. But for now, marketers could target people just based on where they are and what they're looking at. For example, if someone walks into Starbucks and looks at the menu, the Google Glass could recognize that and depending on which company's paid for advertising, Starbucks could heavily advertise seasonal drinks and specials or other coffee palces nearby could recognize that this person is a coffee drinker and therefore target them. Also, as soon as you walk into Starbucks and look at the menu, Google Glass could recognize that and then have options pop-up such as "I see you are at Starbucks, would you like to check-in here?, Tweet that?, Instagram that?, etc."
Google Glass has the potential to completely change life as we know it. It has the capacity to literally make every task easier. It will provide an ample amount of information, such as when comments from social media pop up on your screen when walking by restaurants and stores. This will provide the consumer with much more information on their options and they will be able to make a definitive decision on which option they would like to choose. It will make daily tasks more convenient and has the potential to create big changes.
I think google glasses and project like this is the future of mobile computing. For now google glass still need to be pair with your phone but in the future we may have a standalone google glass that can do anything that your phone can do today and more. I think we also need to figure out how to get privacy right with google glasses. There are places already posting sign that ban google glasses.
I think the Google Glass will affect social media a lot. It will be a more interactive market. I think it will also allow people to become more social and active. Although it will take time for people to get comfortable and used to, once everyone is on the same page it will bring everyone on the same social networking page and everyone will really see how far technology has come!
The thought of wearing glasses that are constantly bringing up tweets and other things would kind of annoy me. Although I think it's really cool, I don't know how well I'd adjust to them. Because the technology is so advance I think it would definitely change the way marketers work. They would probably have a lot of work to do in order to adapt to the product, but I don't see it becoming very popular for a while because I'm guessing the price is going to be incredibly high. I guess we'll see in the future!
