Trying on Google Glass

Last week, I had the opportunity to try Google Glass for the first time at the #DetroitThroughGlass event at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. I have to admit: I was blown away. They're much lighter than I expected and I could see them becoming second-nature. So much better than constantly looking at your phone or computer.

Google just unveiled its Glass Development Kit, which will allow developers to create their own apps for Glass. The sky's the limit for this. Imagine social media apps that pop up tweets about a location as you walk by it, or other ways apps can deliver real time information as you go about your everyday lif. Check out some of the examples from CNET's story:

One of the most impressive was a Glassware app called Word Lens, which translates printed words as you look at them and replaces them with words from the target language. [...] The app can take a German warning sign such as, "Bergweg betreten auf eigene Gefahr," and replace the printed words with, "Mountain path enter on own danger," when looking through Glass. The app wasn't perfect, and its developers said that it might not work with smaller fonts, such as those on restaurant menus. But the app clearly showed Glass' potential utility. Other apps demonstrated included AllTheCooks, for hands-free cooking directions and recipe management; Strava's exercise trackers for running and bicycling; the word game Spellista; and GolfSight, which can reveal fairway distances and help you keep score of your golf game as you play.

How do you think technologies like Glass will affect social media and social media marketing? How would you leverage a technology like Glass a social media marketer? I'd love to hear some of your creative ideas!

While I think that Google glass sounds really cool, I can’t help but think about the massive effect it would have on our society both positively and negatively. I think about how connected and attached our society already is to our smart phones and wonder what life would be like if those phones were constantly in front of our eyes! Although, I don’t know much about how the google glass works, I’ll be honest they do scare me a bit simply for the fact that they have the potential to make life far too convenient with almost no reason or need for human interaction.

In regards to how technologies such as these will affect social media, I believe an entirely new channel will be formed. They open the doors to an incredibly convenient form of social media.  In terms of social media marketing, Google glass would be wise to start a trend on a channel such as twitter. It is likely that Google glass could catch trend on and as a result, through social networks, Google glass is could use earned media rather than paid media.

Student

I agree with you on a lot of points here Anna. I think Google Glass has an enormous amount of possibilities for good as well as many potential bad. The convenience, like you stated, is both a blessing and a curse. In our society, we are always looking for something to make our lives easier, from buying groceries to driving. Google Glass takes this idea to a whole new level. Google Glass also seems to be reforming what we think about communication with others. I've heard stories of its ability to display social media information above people you look at. Although this is quick and fast communication, I can't help but be concerned with its supposed ability to make things TOO EASY.

I think the idea of Google Glass is really cool.  Like other innovative technological products that have been introduced to the market in the past, the anticipation for it is very exciting.  Like you said, it sounds like an enless source of innovation and imagination for things that are used in literally every aspect of our lives.  The translation app, for example, is something I never would have thought to be an option but after reading about it, it sounds like something like that could also be used to learn new languages.  An interactive way of seeing the phrase in both languages along with hearing the pronunciation. I think this new product would accelerate social media marketing extensively.  If companies didn't use it already, I think this would make them definitely see it as a necessity and not an option.  If I was a social media marketer, I would find ways that my product are used in every day life and incorporate those uses into an app that would run all the time and provide tips whenever you are doing or in proximity to one of these uses.

Student

I think the camera on Glass would be fun to play around with. Apps could edit your surroundings as you're looking at the picture you want to take. Imagine looking at a sunset and using Glass to flip through the filters to see which one you want to use. All of it would be right before your eyes. Crazy! Glass is such an innovative product, I see most Americans owning one in 20 or so years. With high potential for marketers to get reach customers in a new way, this could be a whole new medium.

Since i have knew about this product coming out about a year ago it has interested me. I have tried to keep up to date on what google has continues to add to the google Glasses to improve their user interface. The technology i have seen so far is really cool and am eager to see what google has to offer with the increasing technologies over the next several years. I would love to get a pair but knowing that the price will probably be outrages for the first release and wont come down for a while i will unfortunaly have to wait.

Student

I think Google Glass is an awesome idea and can't wait til it comes down in price so I can get one myself. This type of technology can only affect social media to a certain extent, due to the fact that social media networks such as Vine and Instagram are not going to be too viewable on Google Glass. Google is definitely working towards making social media and life intertwince much easier than having to go to your computer everytime you want to check up on something. Google Glass is for sure taking the information age to a new level, seeing that you can basically find out whatever, whenever, without typing or touching a screen.

I have been following the Glass project since they released the Explorer Edition to the public. This was the first version available to consumers; that is if you were lucky enough to get one, and even if you did manage to do so it cost you around $1,200.  There have been rumors going around that Google Glass, when it is actually released, will be around $300 dollars. Now that doesn’t seem all that bad but when you realize that this is just an extension of your phone, like a Bluetooth headset, it seems to be a bit more than some may be willing to spend. I personally will pick one up once they are available for purchase because I think it is going to be a spectacular flagship product that will launch a frenzy of other products trying to compete with Glass. Currently I don’t see much potential for social media usage on a gadget like this. I say that because social media is about writing what you feel, commenting on things people wrote and having conversations about those posts; so if I’m required to talk to Glass to post something on Facebook or Twitter I think that may be a little weird for people to do. Now I think social media sites like Instagram will have a very large increase in users because one of the key functions of Glass is taking HD quality 16:9 photos along with many other Google integrated functions seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSnB06um5r4. So posting something to Instagram will be mindless because you will simply be able to say “Ok Glass take a picture” or you can just tap the side of the unit to snap a picture then say “Ok Glass post to Instagram” allowing for a seamless barrier between the two. This would be something great but that also depends if Glass will require a Wi-Fi signal to do things like this or if they will release a 4G version or it may just be able to do it through your phone, I’m not sure but I’m excited to see what happens. All in all I will get one because its something that’s never been done before and may just revolutionize the industry but the only downside is that I will still have to carry my phone in my pocket, so I’m curious to see if I will end up looking at my phone to still do certain things. I guess all I can do is wait.

This is crazy awesome! To have technology like this, it could change life as we know it. I can not tell you how many times I go to a new store, restaurant, park, mechanic, etc. without knowing what it is really going to be like. I don't have the time to search for reviews on certain websites. With Google Glass I could be walking by two stores and after reading tweets about them instantly, I can stride with ease to the one that sounds best. The best part is that it is hands free. Not only are we making things more convenient for us, but in the end it is safer for other people too. Although looking into the glasses while you are driving might not be the safest, it beats looking down and texting on your phone. It wouldn't surprise me if social media wipes out all other types of media.

Student

After reading through this post, technology continues to blow me away. The increasing activity of social media has driven consumers to buy more and more. This however, I believe to be a good thing. When we buy more products, we are helping the economy, which boosts business around the world. As Google glasses become more and more of a craze, the price will drive down and become more popular than Smartphone’s today.

What an incredible world we live in. This invention is revolutionary, but I was extremely dismissive at first and still very apprehensive of something like this. A big critism of this has been the privacy. I think we can all agree that the possibities are amazing with a product like this. However, with the constent hacking/unapproved survielling of technologies, people may be too scared of this. This reminds me of a Futurama episode titled Attack of the Killer Apps that I think everyone looking at Google Glass should see. Here's a short video if 20 minutes is too much of your time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH3G_haVEho

This is such a cool concept. I have never seen this before so this was pretty mind-blowing to think about. This could definitely be a huge opportunity for social media  sites. People like to get their feeds and get them fast. Google Glass could provide an outlet to develop an app with constant feeds scolling for users. Advertisers could use this as an opportunity to promote themselves. Ads could scroll similar to promoted tweets for certain apps, or run before other content is accessed. There could be location-specific applications such as recognizing a restaurant or other business and come up with tweets, reviews, and other content about the particular business. This could be used by these businesses as well to promote their superior products or service.

Student

Google Glass is really just the beginning for what is to come from the fine folks at Google. I have not have had the chance to try them myself but have done quite a bit of research since they really did spark my interest as soon as they were introduced. The opportunities are endless. When looked at from a social media and marketing aspect, the impact could be huge. I would like to think that one of the main draws to Glass will be the social media integration, so if you look at it as a way to advertise through social media through Glass, then you have yourself a brand new way of bringing your message directly in front of your audience. The way I would implement Glass with social marketing, at least what comes to my mind, is when a consumer using Glass is looking at an advertisement, whether it be print, billboard, television, etc. a box would pop up on Glass asking if you would like to hear more information about the product being advertised. This will bring the link right to the consumer, offering almost no work necessary to get to the information.

Student

This is the coolest thing so far, this is why google is so influncial in our life. Media always drive us creative, I believe there will be more creative things come out soon.

Student

This idea of Goodle Glass blows my mind! I think its a very creative and smart idea for social media, but I fear that people will take advantage of this new product and our social lives interacting face to face would dwindle. I also wonder, how distracting this Glass would be while going out with friends or family. Imagine ads and tweets popping up constantly in your face everywhere you go. To me, I'd feel almost suffocated by the idea.

Student

Google contintues to be one of the most innovative businesses of our time.  The technology incorporated into Google Glass seems to be the future of social media and social media marketing. With the ability to show tweets about locations near by, or tell the wait at a restaurant, Google Glass will be the key for businesses to succeed in the future.

The only doubt I have regarding this new technology is the amount of time it will take for these to fully launch.  I believe the first people to invest in such a product would be the tech-savvy individuals who have a high enough income to buy the glasses.  The next step in this product's life would be to gain enough of a loyal clientele to keep the momentum going.  These steps will be hard for Google to achieve, but I look forward to seeing how the business markets Google Glass.

Student

This is the first I have heard of this new technology. I can't wait until more developers have created apps for Google Glass. These glasses may be a new challenege for GoPros, because HD video recording at the first person view is only one of its many features. I am excited to see how this hands free device will streamline filming while you ride your bike, skateborad, or longboard.

Student

Google Glass is making social media even easier for customers, from computers to tablets to phones and now glasses. I think the Google Glass might take a little time to take to society. Just because of the risks, driving, cycling, and illegally recording in movie theatres. Once this product becomes popular, the government might need to make laws when people can and can’t wear the glasses. I bet it’s a wonderful product and I want to try them out, but it’s not like a phone you can put in your pocket and look at it when you want for quick updates.

Student

Personally, I have not heard much about Google Glass, or even knew what it was before this post. I believe that Google Glass will be a huge craze and people will be very curious about it once it is first released to the public, but I don't think that it will do very well. I can't imagine people walking around wearing these glasses on a daily basis. You could compare this to the new phone/watch Inspector Gadget type thing that Samsung just released. I haven't seen or heard of anyone with it!  I could be wrong though, 10 years ago did I imagine everyone having phones like an iPhone? No Way! It is amazing to see how drastic our technology changes just within a decade. Imagine what everything will be like in another 10 years!  On the other hand, If google glass does well, I do not think that it will have any affect on the use of social media via tablets, phones and laptops.

Student

Once Google Glass is perfected I think it will change the market just like when the first iPhone hit store shelfs.  The Glass is creating a new platform for companies to communicate with consumers.  Advertisments follow us everywhere we go, I can not imagine walking down the street wearing those glasses, having advertisements or placed messages pop up as I walk by a store or a company.  I like to imagine the Glass becoming our second brain, soon we will all be living in a world where everyone is wearing their own customized pair of the Google Glass.

Student

The Google Glass is a pretty cool creation. While reading this blog, I could not help but to think about the popular American animated sitcom "The Jetsons." (Idk why, but I thought about Rosie the Maid when I saw the app about AllTheCooks, hands-free cooking directions and recipe management). Okay, no seriously, technology has really advanced over the years and I'm anxious to see what could be created in the near future. Technology like Glass is innovative, but sooner or later I think technology will exceed humanity. I mean it has already changed the way we communicate, learn and to be honest, I think it kinda made us lazy in some aspects too! But hey like I said, Glass looks pretty cool and I think if we could somehow associate Glass and education, lectures could be less painful!

Student

This is the first I have heard about Google Glass and I must say the concept is awesome! If you would have gone back 15 years and told someone about this they would have thought it was some "Back to the Future" concept. Technology is at it's peak and its so cool that we're in the time where we are experiencing new devices like this one.

As far as practicality goes, I think Google Glass has a lot of potentail. It's essentially all of your devices in one, plus a hundred other new features. However, I would not be caught dead in those things. In five years, who knows, everyone could be wearing them or they could somehow be incorporated into everyday glasses or sunglasses.

From a social media and marketing standpoint I think Google Glass opens up an array of possibilites. For advertising these would be huge and would cut down the cost for companies a lot. It's a way for people to be constantly engaged and connected with their surroundings- especially for people new to an area. It would make the flow of information from source to source a lot easier as well, which would cut down a lot of recieving time.

I'm interested to see where Google Glass will be in five years. Google is an extremely successful and innovative company so if they're putting a lot of time and effort into this I think good things will come from it!

Student

I can see Google Glass taking off in the near future, but I can’t imagine anyone actually wearing them around constantly. Personally, I think that they are silly looking. But, I do think that they make for a good talking point and a good financial investment for people who follow the tech industry. I am interested to see which is more successful, Google Glass or the Samsung Galaxy watch phone.

I think that people are so involved with their social media accounts and staying updating with what is going on in the world around them and their social circle, that Google Glass could make a seamless transition into the technology and social media world, allowing people to be constantly connected without having to reach for a smart phone or computer.

Student

I think there is huge potential with Google Glass for social media marketing, but I don't think the glasses are very practical yet. I don't know anyone, except "techies," who would voluntarily walk around with these glasses on their face, until it becomes the social norm. I think that when this technology takes off and becomes accessible for more people, it could grow into a social norm that we would see regularly on the streets.

Besides that point, I think that Google Glass is great for social media marketing, because it is just a faster and easier way to access social media and be constantly "connected" with the world around us. Restaurants could create a pop up that alerts people nearby of open tables, how long the current wait time is, or what the daily specials are that day. I can see retail stores taking advantage of these apps, and having coupons or sale information pop up in the glasses as you approach the store, or showing pictures of some of their "best sellers," to give shoppers an idea of what types of clothes, jewelry, etc. may be inside a store, so they don't have to waste their time actually going into the store to browse if it doesn't seem to align with their style or interests. As a social media marketer, I agree that the sky is the limit for these apps, and that Glass would just make social media an even more constant and connected (if that's even possible) source of information and advertising for organizations.

Student

There's no question that Google Glass is a practical new piece of technology.  The only concern is how many people will actually be able to own a pair.  I believe as long if Google Glass becomes accessible, it could become an everyday use that people everywhere rely on.

I think things like advertisements and promotional videos would become a part of Google Glass, especially if people use Google Glass for social media.  I think people might be bothered at first, but would learn to tolerate them like we do now with ads on Facebook, Youtube Pandora and etc.

I'm more interested in the practical elements of Google Glass and how they could be used in various professions.  I found this story on Mashable about an app could allow fire figthers to use Google Glass to provide maps and floor plans to firefighters battling smoke in unfamiliar buildings.

I started thinking how other careers could also use Google Glass.  For instance, PR professions could record videos and share in real time.  Any kind of driver could take advantage of the maps app.  College football coaches could even start using them down on the field (Stanford's OC wore them to a Rose Bowl media session).

Like I mentioned, I think if Google Glass becomes accessible to a wide range of people, I think the possibilities will be endless.

Student

I've been hearing a lot about google glass recently and i think the idea is just mind blowing. To think that you are able to pull up apps and contacts right infront of your eyes is incredible. I think google glass would have a big affect on social media and marketing because there would access to it at all times of the day. I also think it's pretty cool that you can make videos from your own eyesight so the person watching it can see it exactly how you saw it. I do think that this will take some time for the technology world.

Student

Technologies like Glass are simplifying the process of accessing social media and connecting with other people. By adding these awesome apps to the amazing Google Glass technology, users are able to omit more products from their social media routine and rely on Glass. There is huge potential in social media marketing to leverage this technology. For example, they could make product suggestions for users while shopping based on what they're looking at. Very exciting technology!

Student

The creation of Glass truly shows how advanced technology is becoming across the globe and how much of an impact social media has on society. I believe that Glass will only help social media advance and make it easier and more accessible for people of all ages. This new technology will make it easier for those who use social media when traveling. As a social media marketer, I would love to use Glass for students studying abroad. Weather it be translating words or converting currency, it would make it a lot easier for students to quickly process information at a more rapid pace than a smart phone would.

Student

If Google Glass becomes more popular it will definitely affect social media and social media marketing. Everything these days is about efficiency and instead of having to pull out your smartphone to find the nearest coffee shop it will just show up in your vision. Now instead of just having apps for smart phones companies will have to create social media apps for glass. I would explain to a social media marketer that this is another tool to get your name and be heard out there, information is becoming more and more accessible and this is a prime explain!

Student

Google Glass will not only change the privacy of social media, it will also change the overall social media and social media marketing world. This new technology will change the way social media is accessed and will allow for social media marketers to be the first to come up with innovative and creative media specifically for Glass.

Student

I think the techonology is obviously incredible. It would change the way the average person looks at traveling abroad if they had a pair. But when I studied abroad last summer in Italy and already felt out of place, so I'm afraid that I would have looked like a fool if I was wearing fancy smart glasses.  It would be cool though if instead of using the glasses it was an app where you could scan something with your iphone and it would translate it.  When I googled Google Glass I saw how you can be doing anything while wearing the glasses and say "take picture" and it will take a picture of whatever youre looking at without you having to press any button.  I think if they could design it to resist damage for sport, it would compete with and even surpass the GoPro cameras.

Student

These glasses are something that I have never or seen before.  They sounds awesome.  But what about people who don't have glasses? Would this be distracting to those who are walking around and things will just pop up in their glasses when they walk by something.  I guess I would say I am in the more conservative side of technology. Don't get me wrong I have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and SnapChat. But in a world when it is so hard to escape from technology having glasses that have things pop up make to think of ways it can be harmful instead of what most people are probably thinking.

Student

Travel agencies would be tremendously benefited from the Google Glass.  Travel agencies can provide package tours complete with a Google Glass rental that act like a tourguide, giving customers 3D directions and suggestions of places to visit.  On top of the Word Lens translating signs, Google should create Google Map and Yelp like applications.  Imagine how convenient it is to know exactly where to go when you are on a backpacking trip around Europe, users would be able to find tourist attractions easier and more efficiently, leaving more time to explore the country.  Then, users could also enjoy local favorites from seeing reviews from the Yelp like application as they passed by local restaurants.  Unlike smartphones, technology such as Google Glass would enhance the travelling experience as it provides opportunity for users to spend more time adoring the scenery rather than looking on screens when doing research.

Student

I love your glasses.

Glass will revolutionize how we view privacy in terms of social media, and inherently social media marketing. Glass will allow us to use real time interaction to our advantage, from spotting an item at a store and getting a discount, to further enabling users to share content. If I were a social media marketer, I would use Glass to create an app like Honey in real time. Honey allows users to search for discounts all over the web at the click of a simple add on button. Imagine the functionality of Honey at Meijer, and being able to use a discount for an item that you had no idea existed!

Augmented reality is the next big trend that will hit almost all the industries. The AR technology enhances the real-life environment virtually using mobile devices or wearable technology. The reason why augmented reality technology is termed as the next big trend is that it seems to be the reasonable step beyond the mobile apps that have been in the market for quite a time now. Businesses have started experimenting with augmented reality. However, big brands like Google, Qualcomm, Canon, and Hewlett-Packard have been already researching and developing the technology and they are about to enter the game with their revolutionary augmented reality apps and tools. Some of the top augmented reality trends that will emerge are eyewear, software and hardware integration, mobile AR apps, and gaming. With augmented reality products like Google Glass and Apple’s iGlass, the revolution of eyewear is about to hit the market. Software and hardware integration are applications linking augmented reality together with remotely controlled devices and considered to be one of the top augmented reality trends in 2013 that will take off in the near future. Some barriers and challenges concerning smart phone augmented reality are GPS, tracking, connectivity, and software. GPS is a problem because GPS on mobile phones tend to have a margin of error. The standard GPS system is just not good enough to support mobile AR at the moment. Depending on the actual location, the accuracy of the sensor information varies significantly. Tracking is another challenge that needs to be solved. Even if the GPS location was correct, the application still needs to know exactly which way you’re facing, which angle you’re looking at and what orientation your head is in at the time. Connection concerns also causes issues because much of the mobile-based augmented reality at the moment involves an app on your phone, which calls up to the Internet for information based on the GPS signals of where you are. However, coverage around the entire country is not good enough for this service. Finally the last barrier of AR is software. Even though we have all the necessary tools and pieces in place, without a usable, non-intrusive, intuitive interface to the consumer, then it would be difficult to properly function AR.

Student

I think technologies like Glass will change the whole social media and social media marketing world. The invention of technology like Glass will open up tons of new doors for social media marketers, giving them chances to come up with more creative ideas. I would approach companies who are interested in the latest and greatest cutting edge technology to encourage them to be the first ones on the bandwagon, so to speak. Being some of the first to create media specific for Google Glass will give them the opportunity to experiment with it first and fine tune their ideas before the concept really takes off.

Student

The idea of social media and digital marketing being simplified through the "Google Glass" is mind blowing. It's ability to replace printed words by using a Word Lens app almost seems too futuristic and robotic. This only shows that technology is simplfying itself in such an advanced manner, that pretty soon the world will be full of free roaming thoughts in one gigantic cloud. This is definitely ground breaking news and a crazy development by Google, who continues to pioneer consumer search and convenience through all platforms of technology.

Student

I posted on this last week so i hope i get credit for this but who knows. I wish there was something new to read, but oh well. Anyway if I'm posting again I guess I'll just say what I really think about Google Glass and similar products. While I think that the concepts for these gizmos are pretty cool, I only see one thing when i hear about them: Our World Is Becoming Far Too Dependant on Technology. We are becoming lazier. It's plain to see in upcoming generations and it's pretty sad. People are beggining to lose sight of what actually makes this world beautiul and what it truely means to work hard. These inventions scare me and I think that while right now they are very cool, in the long run they will fuck us over.

Student

The Google Glass is amazing! I cannot imagine owning a pair of these! Social media and social marketing will be changed forever. Ads will be sent directly to the glasses and interfere with daily interactions. Looking at certain things will soon trigger a google search and it will look just like on the web where the ads are popping up all over. I think these are a great idea and I hope to own a pari soon!!!

Student

The whole idea of Google Glass is just mind blowing. To think there would be something like this 10 years ago I would not believe it. The fact that you can open up a app and have it right in front of your face instead of waiting for it to load on your smart phone is awesome.

Student

I love the idea of Google glass, but think it has a long way to go before it becomes a major threat/player to companies and social media. I haven't tried Google Glass but have heard from friends who have that they got headaches from using it.  The future of the technology is what's key though. This is the future. Similar technologies will eventually replaces phones, and all devices, making social media more realistic and real-time than ever. It will be cool to see more photos and interactions from an eyes perspective, opposed to ever-popular selfies.

Student

When reading what Google Glass can do, it is intimidating. I feel like I would have no idea how to work the contraption. The idea of Google Glass sounds exciting though. Being able to translate other languages and being able to create your own apps sounds like an era for creativity, and marketing. Google Glass will only enhance the use of social media because it is available to you all the time. It will also stir up different ways to market other items through the use Google Glass. If I was going to start marketing Google Glass I would chose a higher income target market considering it is probably extremely expensive.

Student

Technology is an important aspect of my life and everybody elses life in this day in age. As technologies continue to become more and more advanced people are going to be more and more leniant on them. Without technology the media would not be the way it is today. As social media takes a place greatly in marketing and business area, we can have more chances how to use social media more effectively and successfully.

I think that developments like google glass are cool but I also think it can add on to becoming a lot for public. I am a pretty private person so having something so close and interactive with my daily life is a little bit intimidating.  I like the idea but then how anti-social will people become? Is it bad for users that already use corrective glasses? From a advertisng perspecitve it would be really nice because our ads would be right in the eye of the consumer, they can't get away from it. We would basically be inside their heads.  I am not sure of new ways to use it for marketing though.

When these things hit the market for everyone- I'm going to run into things. Just getting it out there. Nobody is going to be paying attention to what's in front of them adn we're all going to run into things. I hope there's a helmeet attachment. Keep me updated. Social media was something we could access or ignore at will, and this device is putting information in our faces 24/7. It will certainly be useful and i could certainly see it as something everyone has for use in their daily lives. Why not? we're all attached to our cell-phones anyone. I'm pretty sure mine has just morphed with my hand.

Yes, I do think technologies like Google Glass will affect social media and social media marketing and how we apply these things to our everyday life. It's going to be weird when one day people will be utilizing something like this product instead of cell phones and all other outlets.
