With more and more people "cutting the cord" and dumping cable/satellite TV for Internet video (e.g. Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV or Roku), it's no surprise that online video advertising is booming.
According to a recent report from FreeWheel, a company that manages web video ad placement, video ad views are growing even faster than online video plays:
Lots of people pay attention to TV ads - especially during major events like the Super Bowl when new ads come out. I've found myself paying attention to online video ads more and more - especially on sites like YouTube that let me skip past ads that aren't interesting or relevant to me.
Do you pay close attention to web video ads? What are your favorite ones? What don't you like?

Interactive online ads are very compelling! But there are times when I hate them, especially when I'm viewing several videos on YouTube back-to-back. However these ads do let you skip them after a couple seconds, and I have found that sometimes I just watch the ad since I have the choice. I watch most of my TV from things I've recorded on my DVR, so its always a relief to fast-forward through the commercials but I do find myself sometimes rewinding to see an ad that stuck out to me. This is similar to online video ads, which I think show more interesting things than i.e. a new local dentist office.
I personally am not a fan of the web video ads mainly for the reason that it adds an unneeded aspect to watching TV shows or videos online. I use Youtube a lot to watch and listen to music videos and it started becoming such a hassel with the increased ads before videos. There is a legal app you can download for free or if you would like to "donate" to called AdBlocker and it allows you to skip and block all ads completely. The only problem with Hulu is that they have a software where it can detect if you are using AdBlocker and does not allow you to watch the videos unless you diable AdBlocker. Personally I am not a fan of Hulu and do not use it often and having an AppleTV is great because I can watch Netflix on it without the extra ads. The rare times I use Hulu when an ad comes on I usullay do not pay attention to them and do something else while the ads play.
I'm really not a fan of the increase in ads over the past few years. If I wanted to watch the ads I would be watching live television. Also, I feel as if the same ad plays over and over when its online, whereas on television you might see the same commercial a few times a day - not 4 times during one show. I honestly love it when you can skip through an ad after the first five seconds. If I have to wait for the whole ad to play through I usually will get up and do something real fast rather than watch it. Having ads online is just plain annoying, whether it's interrupting my pandora station or watching tv episodes. This is a problem because I specifically use the internet to listen to music or watch shows to not be interrupted by commercial breaks.
The depression of cable/satellite TV is not difficult to predict as far as the Internet usage is still dramatically growing. However, the trend of online video ads was surprisingly growing which was not waht I expected. I think it is the change of the contents and qualities of those video ads. Marketers know what people like to watch much better than before. They don't just talk to themselves, but realized the importance of the interaction with people. Some ads let people to vote what kind of endings they expect to happen. By doing so, people are found more interested in those ads. Another reason is that people got the chance to skip the ads. Also, there is the countdown clock on the screen which tells the time the ads remained. People are now more comfortable with these new changes than before.
If I'm forced to watch ads (I can't skip straight to video) I usually only pay attention to or watch the short ones (no more than probably 10 seconds long) otherwise, if i see that it is longer (on Hulu and YouTube they give the time left on the ad) I usually check my social media sites instead of watching the ads. I think that might be a big downside to Online advertising, being on a computer gives me easier access to multitask during ads or commercials vs if I were on my couch watching TV Im more likely to sit and watch them instead of getting up to do something before the TV program comes back on.
I don't really pay attention to video ads at all. For example, when I'm watching shows on Hulu and an ad plays, there's a button in the corner asking me if the ad is relevant. I never click it because I just don't care, I'm usually multitasking on commercial breaks. I think it's a good idea if people actually click it, but I wouldn't assume many viewers do. When I'm on YouTube and it only makes me watch part of an ad, I don't pay attention at all, instead watching the seconds count down until I can click skip. I think that video ads have come a long way in engaging consumers, but still have much to improve on.
Most of the times I don't pay attention to online video ads, but when I do, I watch the whole ad closely and in its entirety. The fact that you can skip through ads definitely makes me just go straight to the video I'm trying to watch. I think the next thing marketers should do is customize video ads depending on what the user is interested in. Currently, you get ads related to the whatever site you're on (so for instance, if you are at a digital technology site, you are likely to get an Adobe product ad), but when it comes to video ads on Youtube, rarely do you get videos about what you are actually interested in. Just like google ads, where you get banners of shoes stores (because you were looking up shoes the night before), videos should do the same.
I personally pay more attention to web video ads then to tv ads. When watching TV and an ad comes on I usually engage my phone or laptop. When a web ad comes on I am either already on my phone or laptop so I have no alternative to turn to. I feel this is a major reason I watch webads more then tv ads. Also I have noticed that webads are more targeted vs tv ads which increases my interest.
Lately, I personally have been paying more attention to web ads. They are shorter than TV ads. For TV ads, whenever, the tv goes to commercial, I immediately stand up and do something more interesting rather than watch the ads, unless its something that really catches my attention. Whereas web ads are short, therefore, I am less tempted to leave the room. I have been using to Spotify and Pandora lately. In my opinion, their ads can also be effective since you can’t skip it and they are short and hearing ads. I think if you have many ads all put together, its hard to stand out and catch the viewers attention.
I think web ads are a smart idea for companies to get involved in, and overall I don't really mind them. I don't watch tv online because I have a DVR at my apartment and would rather watch shows on my tv, but on youtube, I feel indifferent towards video ads. As long as the ads are only shown at the very beginning of the video I want to watch, and as long as they have a "Skip This Ad" feature, I am fine with them. If the ad is not for me, I will skip it and only lose about 5 seconds of my life. If it catches my attention, I will watch it the whole way through. For example, the ad for the movie, "The Internship", was one that I found interesting, so I watched that and then got back to my original youtube video. I think that as long as we can still skip through ads that aren't interesting to us, having online ads will just feel like the norm, and not detract from the web user's experience over time.
Honestly, I find myself paying more attention to web ads and videos online. Especially being on YouTube almost daily, I'll find myself either sitting through the ads before a video or just waiting for it to finish, patiently. Usually the online ads before YouTube videos are the ones to catch my attention, and I'll find myself opting out of the 'skid ad' button. They're usually cleverly produced and written, and appear to be funnier or sometimes wittier than ads you'll catch on TV. I might be biased being an advertising major, but I usually try and tough it out sitting through the online web ads.
When I am on Youtube usually I just let the ad run unless I'm with friends then I skip the ads. I figure it's a small price to pay to watch a 30 second ad and get my music for free or watch videos for free. When I am catching up on my shows on the network site there is no way to skip through the ads so I am forced to watch the ads and usually end up sitting there waiting for my program to come back on because these commercial breaks are shorter than those when you watch on TV. If I have to get up and do something I will pause my show and resume it when I have time. I honestly don't mind ads that much considering I am an advertising major but online ads are not as annoying as commercials on TV.
I personally pay much more attention to the web ads vs traditional ads. The reason for this is because the ads have the ability to click throught it and skip it. I do not feel forced to watch it. Also, I have noticed that many online web ads are usually more clever, funny, and attention getting then tv ads because they know that people have the ability to click through and skip so they have to find a way for them to stay on the ad. I think that the best online web ads are the ones that great suspense right at the start of the ad and make you want to view the rest of it. Overall, I feel that this is more effective for me.
I absolutely despise online advertisements. I know I can't escape being targeted by advertisers no matter where I go but if I'm on sites, especially like YouTube or Netflix where I hold an account, I want to watch my programs or listen to my music without interruption. It's not as bad with YouTube because they show their advertisements at the very beginning or end of what you are watching, but especially with sites like Pandora where advertisements are aired in the middle of play time I begin to get frustrated. I do however understand how this can be a very advantageous form of reaching out to consumers though for organizations/companies. More and more people are beginning to focus their attention on the web and most people have much more patience than myself.
I have noticed more and more the popularity of video ads popping up on online videos and even my apps like Pandora. I knew that one day YouTube would start including them but at some point to me it is very annoying. I personally skip any ad that I can because usually the only reason I am online or watching a video I am looking for something specific or I am in the middle of something and don't really want to waste my time on watching ads. I guess this means my favorite online ads are none or the ones that you can skip pretty quickly into, because I feel I personally see enough through TV and other Medias.
I am that person with the quick mouse finger hitting <skip this ad>. I pay them little, if any, attention, and consider them a nuisance and distraction. Not being able to skip them is frustrating, and even more so when I have to sit through the same ad again because it’s loaded on another site. The current annoying one is with the Poptarts in the photo booth. In my opinion, advertisements should run along the bottom or side of the screen. If folks are interested, they can click on it. If not, it is easily ignored. That said, I would think it is not an effective use of advertising dollars, as this goes back to “old style” interruption marketing, which ignores the long tail approach. It seems like it is very broadly targeted, using a shotgun approach instead of a rifle approach.
I pay attention to video ads because I have to. When I watch vidoe clips, ads like Audi or KIA will pop up ahead of the video. Sometimes I will finish watching them since car ads are really luxious and fancy, where beauty and hansome guys will cast a plot that like movie. This kind of video ads are much more efficient to reach target audience. People have no tendency in purchasing a car or has no interest in cars can skip the ads, while those who wanna a car or potentially can own a car in the future will be attracted by the ads, and even purchase a car because the ads.
I always like video ads because they are arranged accordingly to the content you choose to watch. Thus sometimes they serve as a useful platform to get information. For example, when I watch online Yoga class on Youtube, the ads promoting local fitness center will pop out. I found that ads useful because I need a fitness center to keep my figure in shape, otherwise, I will not practice Yoga.
I do not pay close attention to web video ads. The only times I really see these are when I watch videos on YouTube. I always skip the ads if I have the option and when I don't have the option, I usually open a new browser to do something else while the ad plays. I don't pay attention to commericals a lot on TV either so this makes sense why I don't pay attention to web video ads. If ads played that were more relevant to the video I was watching, I'd be more willing to watch them. The only times I really care about ads are during the Super Bowl. If a major event was broadcast on YouTube, I think I would care more about the ads.
This report is spot on. Web video ads are the next phase of ad evolution. As every industry adopts to changes, so too must the ad business. As more and more people view their favorite TV shows on computers, smartphones, iPads, and other types of tablets, it is just the next logical step so I am not surprised by this report.
If I missed my favorite TV shows (NCIS and Revenge), I will log on to my computer or iPad and watch the episode. Before the show airs, I get web ads and there are a few throughout the program but not as many as on TV. Because I am on the computer, I am less likely to get up when the ad starts playing, so for me advertisers have my undivided attention. This is also true when I watch on my iPad.
I only seek out ads on YouTube or the web if they get a lot of buzz, then I will check it out. I would say that I pay closer attention when watching on the computer or iPad. As for which one is my favorite, I like the Toyota, Prius Family ad – “Let’s go Places”. I am pretty sure I saw this ad while watching something on my iPad.

I can see why Internet advertising is booming. I know I use Hulu to catch up on my TV shows, but I personally rarely pay attention to the ads. Many times I open a new tab and go on Twitter or Facebook while the ads play. The ads just become white noise while I wait for my show to come back on. It also becomes extremely annoying when the same ads play over and over during the course of one show. I do like when Hulu allows me to choose what ad plays, that way the ad becomes more relevant to my life. I have also noticed that many sites now have a way to skip the ads after a few seconds.
Now a days, I have found myself watching the ads more than I used to. Espeically since Youtube will not let you skip all of them unless they are the really long ads. I have not noticed any in particular that have caught my eye but I'm sure if I saw them again I would remember that specific ad. More often then most, I do still skip the ads if I have the option because most are irrelevant to my interests. I see how businesses are getting more attention through online ads though since people are spending more of their time online. Whether it's on their phones, computers, or tablets, people are constantly on the internet.
I have noticed that now everytime i watch a youtube video that an ad almost everytime pops up. Sometimes they are intresting and sometimes they are just plain annoying. During the elections i believer every video had a ad campaign before it. When i go to a site that ads i cant skip sometimes they are intresting, but do i choose to watch them...not really. I spend time catching up on my shows from the past week by watching them on comact xfinity. Most of them have ads connected to them, the only ones i really enjoy are ads about special causes that they are particpating in. Many i did not know existed. So in a sense the advertisers have won and caught my attention. But when im online watching videos i wanna watch the video not a commerical that i will most likely see on tv the next hour or day. Its crazy to think now how many ads are now run online. I wonder what will be the next step.
Actually, I don’t pay a lot of attention to web video ads because those ads are not mandatory. It’s easy for me to skip the ads after five seconds. Usually, I skip the ads as soon as I can. I understand why web video ads is an increasing marketing because TV is not the only media right now and people spend more and more time on Internet. However, the efficiency of those ads is not guaranteed. To me, I’d rather watch the ads on TV because those ads are more delicate and well-made. Sometimes, I enjoy the ads on TV because they are interesting and relaxing. Most of ads on web are rough and boring. That’s why a lot of people like me skip the ads and never pay any attention to the banner when we surf the internet.
Since web video ads are a growing and promising market, it’s important for marketers to make sure the efficiency of those ads. How to make ads interesting and intriguing so that people won’t skip them immediately is a challenging task for them as to the web video ads market.
I totally understand why internet video advertising is booming. I watch almost all of my TV online, when it's convenient for me. I can also say with certainty that I mute or switch tabs when an ad comes on. They're white noise, something that's just there in the background. I also think that burnout is very possible with online advertising. On Hulu, I've noticed the same Target ad 4 times during a program. By the end of the show, I'm almost willing to pay for Hulu Plus to get rid of them! The ads that I'm willing to pay attention to are usually the clever, subtle banner ads as opposed to the obnoxious interruptions that are video ads.
I think these video ads are a great idea. People are already on these sites and if they play an ad there is a good chance you will skip it, but if it doesn't get skipped people can see the ad and due to cookies it may be tailored to their needs. As an advertising major I understand you need to advertise where your customers are and if they are already on a website you may as well throw up an ad on that website.
Web video ads are some of the best ways to reach a large audience. Sites like Hulu have the right idea by letting their viewers pick which advertisements they want to watch. While it doesn't allow people to completely skip over an ad, it forces the viewer to watch something but makes them feel more in control of the decision. Movie trailers are my favorite genre, but I wouldn't say I have a favorite online video ad. I don't particularly like ones that are about video games. I'm not a gamer so when I see ads about games I lose interest instantly.
As an advertising major, I think video ads are a great way to reach your audience (if its the right one). However, thye should limit the amount of ads seen per show becuase many people are turned off by ads online.
Web video ads really are a strong area of advertising for companies to use. So many people are online that it would be silly not to utilize it. As for my views on web video ads- if I can skip it I will. Usually if I am online doing something that would make an ad pop up such as watching a video on youtube or a tv show, then I really don't want it interrupted for the ad. I also have a hard time because if I watch a tv show online, I will see the same ad at least 5 or 6 times during the 40 minutes the show is on. That gets annoying and makes me dislike the ad and whatever it is selling more.
I find myself watching more and more of the web video ads especially if the video requires you to watch the majority of the ad before your media begins. I do not mind the ads but when I am on the same site and forced to watch the same ad over and over I begin to have a negative perspective on the brand being advertised. I still enjoy watching ads on TV and if a brand utilizes a celebrity or topic I like, I will even search for the ad and watch online. An example was tthe Style in Training ad that was promoted ontv and FunnyorDie.com. The ad was a collaboration with the popular humor website and a men's fashion line that featured Lion's quarterback Matthew Stafford. Part of the ad was displayed on tv but was only shown in full online. I think this brought positive recognition to the brand because it utlized both mediums.
I am more of computer people than T.V watcher. I don't really watch T.V and that means web video is more interesting and easy to be exposed. I even watched the Super Bowl ads on Youtube, not on actual T.V. These days, people easily spread the ads on youtube, Facebook or twitter and it is just easier to get other peoples' attention than T.V ads. I don't remember what I like most from web video ads but Gangnam Style by Psy could be one of them, if it can be called ads.
I have also found myself paying attention to online video ads more than before. I was always annoyed with those mostly more than 20 seconds ads launched before videos in the past years. Most of those ads were boring, and I always met same one from several different videos. Nearly recent 1 year, I was attracted more with web video ads than before, maybe because I am advertising major as never giving up a chance to watch ads, or maybe because the quality of ads increased since video ad views grew fast. For example, I found the ads were all from Super Bowl on YouTube videos I watched these days, and they were certainly appealing to me.
Personally, I find web video ads very frustrating. Commercial's during the actual airing of a television show are one thing, but when you finally have the time to catch up on a show that you missed, you don't want to have to watch ads -- you just want to watch the show and be done. I actually installed an adblocker application on my computer so that no ads show. Sometimes I still have to wait the full 30 seconds by watching a black screen though, which is just as frustrating. I feel like it is a good way to reach people, especially because they're a captive audience, and are willing to wait to watch the rest of their show. This versus tv advertising is smart, because people have the choice to just leave because they know their show will be back on in less than 5 minutes. Since there's only 1 or 2 ads in online video marketing, it doesn't allow you the chance to go anywhere so you're pretty much forced to watch. The whole tactic is smart, but invasive.
I pay close attention to web video ads but if it doesn't seem interesting to me and I can skip it after five seconds, then I will. I like the ads that have the option to skip because if I'm not going to enjoy the ad or if I'm not interested than there's no point in me watching it. My favorite ads are usually tv show ads or movie previews. I'm really interested in music, movies, and tv shows so those ads appeal most to me. Once I'm graduated I will need to look for a new car so pretty soon I'll be interested in car ads too to see which is the best option for me. I don't really enjoy video game ads because I don't play video games so the ads are pointless to me and don't make sense.
I still am pretty much a TV watcher. While I sometimes watch shows or movies online, typically I watch it on my actual television. I guess that's because I have a relatively big television and don't want to watch shows on my smaller computer screen. For some odd reason, I don't mind ads on TV, but I absolutely hate web video ads. I always skip them when I can, no matter what. I mostly hate how they play the same ad over and over again on online shows. After I see it the first two times, I am thoroughly annoyed to have to keep watching it during every commercial break. Perhaps if there were more variety in the ads being played, I wouldn't hate web show ads quite so much. My least favorite ads played during an online show are the ones for the University of Pheonix. They are frequently played when watching shows on NBC.com. Since that's one of the only places I really watch shows online, I have gotten really sick of them.
I watch so many shows online, and I personally am not a fan of the ads. I always skip them when I can. Even if it doesn't let me skip them, I rarely watch because I'll go to a new tab and do something else until it's over! The absolute worst ones though are the little ones on the sides of the screen that just randomly come up and won't let you exit out. I don't think that TV commercials are as bad as online ones because they're fairly long so you can actually do something productive while they're showing.
I personally have stopped watching TV basically altogether. I now only watch for sporting events. For everything else I watch I just use Netflix. One thing I noticed about ads on netflix oor youtube, etc. is I do not pay attention to them nearly as much as I would if they were on TV. If there is a option to skip the Ad 9 times out of 10 im skipping it. It's not that I dont find the 5 seconds of the ad interesting its more so that I have the option to skip immediatly to what I originally wanted to watch.
I often pay attention to advertisements on television because I like to see how creative companies can get and especially because I am an advertising major. Whether they are entertaining or annoying, they still get people's attention and manage to promote their product. My favorite advertisement on television is the Sonos commercial where Janelle Monae dances in her living room with friends using the Sonos wireless HiFi system. I didn't know what the ad was for the first few times I saw it, but I love the song. As far as web video ads go, I think they are pretty annoying and tend to click skip whenever I'm trying to watch something on YouTube. However, I do follow up on AdAge a lot and they include a Top 10 Viral Video Ads Chart. The number 1 video, Samsung Mobile USA - El Plato Supreme, actually caught my attention. Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen have to pitch their ideas for an ad during the Super Bowl, but they aren't allowed to say "Super Bowl." I found it humorous.
It makes complete sense that this is what it has turned into. I've stopped watching TV as my main medium since about 2009 when my family finally got highspeed internet and ditched dial-up! I still watch commercials for big events like the Superbowl because they're interesting. However, online, they seem to vary too infrequently or they're too tailored to me and I get really sick of seeing the same ad all of the time. Maybe I'd pay attention more if it weren't so annoying.
Honestly, I feel that web video ads are much more intrusive than television commercials. I can't remember the last time I actually paid attention to an ad I was forced to sit through while watching YouTube, Netflix, or Hulu. It seems like during the commercial is always a great time to do something else really quickly before sitting down to enjoy a TV show or movie. The only reason I can think of for TV ads being more acceptable to me than web video ads is that I'm used to seeing close to 10 commercials in between my favorite cable television shows; it's become a part of watching the program. Web videos just seem intrusive and unnecessary, especially the interactive ones that force me to pay attention. In the end, I can confidently say that I am much more effectively reached by television ads over web video ads.
I believe that web video ads are kind of forcing the comercials on people. With comercials before each video you watch online, it makes people not want to wait. For TV commercials, people feel the right to leave whenever they want because its so long and has a pattern to it. People generally dont appreciate it if they know there is going to be a 30 second long ad before they watch each video online.
Personally, I absolutely love watching ads on TV and searching for them on my own online; I even have a subscription to AdAge to keep me up-to-date with the newest industry trends. But ironically, I don't tend to watch online video ads ever. Maybe that's because I don't watch many random YouTube/online videos as it is, even though I'm watching more online videos than I used to. But when I want to watch a video online, it's usually because I heard about it on the news (i.e., the Harlem Shake) and/or a friend told me about it/posted it on Facebook.
Overall, I've found that when I have the time to search for a video online, I'm not in the mood to watch an ad because it's usually my down time or my break from studying/working and I'm not in the mood (i.e., patient enough) to watch the online video ad in addition to the video. Now that I think about it, I suppose the more I watch/search for online videos, the more patient I am with online video ads.
The only issue I have with online video ads is that they're usually (annoyingly) repetitive to the point where I sometimes wish I could ask the agency/business what they were thinking playing that ad so much. I'm all for frequency, but hearing the same ad 4-5 times during an episode of one of my favorite TV series can get obnoxious, especially because there's usually only one ad per "commercial break" online so it's usually the same ad I hear 4-5 times. More online video ad variety would probably enourage me to ignore the "Skip Ad" button and actually watch it.
It's no secret: ads are annoying. No matter where you get them. I happen to be a bit of a commercial fanatic (I love watching commercial especially during high-profile events). However, when an ad interrupts your favorite moments, there's nothing I want to do more than toss my computer out a window. Fact of the matter is, advertising works. Whether its a good or bad ad, people talk. So I personally do pay attention to these internet ads being an advertising minor. I loved the M&M shell ads. The KONY 2012 web ad also really moved me and the rest of the world. Online advertising works if you're capturing your audience like these ads have.
Personally, I pay attention to web ads when I am watching shows online only once or twice. However, I do remember them because the same ads plays multiple times per one show that I am watching. My personal favorite is the Samsung Galaxy "The Big Game". I just happen to enjoy the awkward setting and creative ways they made up to talk about the Superbowl with the 49ers and Ravens. I think the biggest turn off for web ads are how the same ones play over and over again. The become annoying. I believe if there was more of a mix of web video ads per show/website that there would be more viewers interest and high likeability for web advertisement. I have always enjoyed advertisements, TV commercials specifically and web video ads are right up that alley.
From an advertiser's standpoint, taking advantage of Youtube and other video hosting sites is a great opporunity to promote products. However, I feel they are less effective than traditional TV ads. In one situation, your audience is sitting at a computer, with multiple computer tabs open, probably checking email while simultaneously loading a video on Youtube. At the first sign of an ad, they will click away to finish another project and come back when the intended video begins to play.
In the other instance, a viewer is stationary, usually relaxing, and not willing to change the channel to much for fear of missing their scheduled program. However, with inventions like DVR, these ads are now beginning to reach few people. I do not have a favorite ad, but I definitely prefer television ads to online advertisements. TV ads seem to be more creative, and are targeted at the audience more thouroughly than Youtube ads.
I pay absolutely zero attention to web ads. I personally think its rude how YouTube cuts to a web ad in the middle of some videos. I respect the ads that play before the video more than those that interrupt. The only time I do watch them is when the "skip ad in 5 seconds" option is missing. Other than that, I abuse the option to skip more than anyone I know. It's like I'm paying more attention to the countdown to skip that I am paying attention to the 5 seconds that are mandatory. Now it would be smart to put a smaller ad in around that 5 second link (then someone would actutally see it.) The ads aren't ever relevant to the videos I'm watching and maybe that's why I always skip them. I honestly use Netflix so I won't have to deal with ads/ I'll even wait to watcha show a few days later just so I'll have the option to skip through videos. Yes, it's that bad.
I would have to agree with the majority of the class in saying that I definitely can't stand video ads especially when they interupt the middle of my show. One of the things that I liked about watching shows online was that most of the time I didnt have to waste my time with ads but with the new booming online video ad industry as you pointed out, its harder and harder to avoid them. As some of my classmates pointed out, not only is the ad itself annoying to suffer through but sometimes depending on unreliable college internet, I have to sit there and wait for the ad to load as well. To answer your question, for the most part I dont pay much attention at all to the ads and skip them whenever I can. As for favorites, I guess some of the funnier ones that they adapted from television I find funny everyonce in a great while.
I was just watching a web video ad on youtube in which a celebrity who I personally like was featured adveritsing a new snack. Had that celebrity not been in the web ad I doubt that I would have watched it. While I usually do not pay attention to web ads at all and when there is a skip button I usually click it, if there is something that grabs my attention I will definitely try to tune in. An example of things that can grab my attention are celebrities that I like, creativity, and innovation. Without these elements, I definitely think I will pass on whatever ad that comes my way.
For me, I find myself skipping over and mentally filtering a lot of online ads. Most of the time they seem like spam or random pop ups and I just get an "autotune" mode where I tune them out. The only time I really pay attention to the online ads are when I'm visiting credible websites that have legitamate ad campaigns running on them.
Maybe I'm too traditional, but online ads just dont compare to TV ads for me. I can click around my computer and find loopholes to get around ads, but TV ads usually demand my attention and, lets be honest, everyone grew up expecting ads on TV. Every program has commercial time. It is for this reason that I feel like watching a TV program and watching ads go hand in hand more harmoniously, while running into ads on the web are just annoyances. I'm sure with everything getting more and more digital I will start (probly be forced to start) paying more attention to the ads on the web. But for now, I try my best to avoid them.
I agree with you Ross 100%, am also a big fan of Internet ads. One of my favorite things about online ads is something that you mentioned in your post above, which is that a lot of sites allow you to choose an option to watch all the ads (or one really long one) before your show even starts. This allows you to watch your show free of interruption. The interactive feature is also something that is great about online advertisements, and something that normal commercials do not offer. The interactive feature allows me to find out more right in that commercial if it is something that I am interested in. Once again I think you were spot on with this post.
