Have you ever used social media to get a job?

Large retailers are finding it difficult to hire employees for the holiday shopping season, and so many have turned to social media to recruit seasonal employees.

The Wall Street Journal recently covered this topic in a great article, full of examples of how companies use social media to recruit employees:

To fill about 1,000 seasonal positions, Beverages and More Inc. began advertising jobs on social media last month alongside cocktail recipes and promotions for 5-cent bottles of wine. The California-based chain of wine, beer and liquor stores initially was hesitant to tap customers as potential hires, but the strategy worked. Online applications increased 66% from the previous month.

Of the examples included in the WSJ story, which do you think is the most compelling – and why?

Would any of these pitches make you want to apply for a job? What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages for a retailer in recruiting employees through social media?

I do use social media to get jobs. I am interested in working as a publicist or a social media director so they all post stuff on social media. I recently dmed someone on instagram who I wanted to work with and that is how we connected. I think that people check their socialmedia more than their e-mail. When you are standing in line you usually scroll through insta instead of going through your e-mail so if you want to connect with a company the best way for you to do it is to get in touch with them via instagram or twitter or some sort of other social media handle the company uses a lot of. I also think LinkedIn is a form of social media and that is the way most jobs in this day are found. I usually hear about internships on LinkedIn as well and I then look for the recruiter to send inmail to. Social Media is the best way to connect with jobs, so I say go for it!

I have never used social media get a job but jobs have tried to get me using sites like LinkedIn. Recruiters will send me messages saying things about my past work and how they have a position in sales or marketing open and they would love to interview me. I have gone to many of these interviews and I must say, its no different than just filling out an application and talking to them later. The only difference is that it felt a little different in the interview because it feels like they want you instead of you just wanting a job. As for if I would ever apply for these jobs, I would have to say no. I can see why some people would but I think that you are actually fighting harder for these jobs because of the amount of people that fill out apps online. I am a very personable person and like to actually speak to bosses in-person rather than just talking through a computer and hoping I have the best resume.

Through the use of social media many employers and tapped into a potentially wide range of future employees. WIth such a large amount of the population using social media everyday, I have noticed even that job postings have been featured on my Twitter feed. Although I follow companies and find their job postings on Twitter and Facebook, I find myself seeing them around the holidays on my banner ads when I open up my Facebook page. This is a great tool and a greaty way to gain attention and more traffic flow to your website and job applications.

I have had my fair share of encounters with holiday season employees. They do not have much information on the products in the store, or usually make an error with your transaction. I had a couple horrible experiences with receiving Christmas presents in time due to error by these employees. I am not a huge fan of LinkedIn because I believe that there is so much more to me or any of my peers than what you see on our profiles. I do not think social media is the proper way to recruit employees for the holiday season, or regular working seasons at all, unless further interviews are provided. I have nothing to hide on social media, I just think that it is not an exact representation of anybody at all. Yeah, a resume doesn't help much either, but it just decides if the employer should go further with an interview. I think we should just stick to the old-fashioned way.

In my opinion, we may have a job by make a really well made social network services account. Nowadays, Internet is so much activated by the use of social network services. Things are spread in the internet rapidly. Because of this reason, most of the well know companies are keeping at least one social network service account with their name. It is very important to keep them well managed and stay in great shape. Social Network Services are became one of the field of job. So I think manage social network service account well could lead you to get a job maybe.

I actually believe that social media is just a platform where people share their thought and feelings in our daily lives. Before I fall into an era where I have to find a job after graduating from college, I figured out that this social media is actually behaving as a platform where people can get a job or look for a job seeker. Even though I never earned a job from social media, I definitely saw a lot of communities either on facebook, twitter, or instagram that people can get their jobs. Within short paragraphs or couple sentences, people will be able to get the information which company is looking for which position or people, and whoever sees that posts faster than others, earn a chance to apply for that position. I really can not say that this is the most right way to earn a job position which gets out of the traditional and formal ways to apply for a job, but I discovered that this much, social media has been settled down as a platform where people can even get a job.

I have gotten jobs through Facebook before. I do a lot of tradeshow and promotional work, and there are many groups/pages that post job opportunities. I have also noticed companies post job ads on Twitter and Instagram. I think by getting responses on social media, companies can then look at candidates profiles and see how they present themselves online. Online/social media presentation has become very important, so I think posting job ads on social media is very fitting in today's society.

I think this is smart for employers to start posting jobs via social media. Social media has millions of people on them.  If you are then contacted through the social media ad then the employer can check out the persons social media profile and history right there and then.  Not everyone reads the newspaper.  Posting jobs on social media is innovative and will be the thing to do eventually.

Nowadays it is becoming harder and harder for emloyees to find a well-matched amployer, as well as the other way around.  I find it interesting that companies are now turning to social media in order to help fix this issue.  Th example I find most compelling is BevMo. reaching out to potential employees on Twitter.  The reason this is most compelling to me is because Twitter only allows for 140 characters so it is hard for them to convey all the information necessary through one short post.  Instead, a quick tweet is used to grab your attention, and then a link is provided for further information.  This is one of several advantages of recruiting through social media.  Also, companies are able to see your profiles, which allows them to make a first impression before even meeting you.  This is also an advantage for potential employees, because they can learn a lot more about the company by viewing their social media accounts.  another advantage for the retailer, is that they can reach a large amount of people at one time, making it more likely that there are valuable employees in the applicant pool.

I think this definitely creates a convenience factor in job search, but the intergration of our professional lives and personal lives is becoming a little too intergrated. We are almost always having to shield our true personalities in the sake of maintaing our professional persona. On a positive note, we are familiar with social media as a generation, and can use this asset to our advantage when job searching by broadcasting our skills and letting people know we are in search of a job.

Student

I personally believe that social media is quickly becoming the driving force of our society, we are no longer as worried about personal meetings, or our actual physical appearance. We care about how we look to others ONLINE. "How does my picture look? Do you think it will get enough likes? Boy if it gets 50 likes I feel like its a good one then." This is the inner dialogue of a majority of society. Applying for a job is no different. You pick the best photo you have that will allow you to qualify yourself to the right job. You want a prestine online profile that is going to stand out from others. I believe applying for a job with social media is smart, and those that can do it right are at a serious advantage. Think about it, when was the last time you actually printed off a cover letter? Chances are you sent it in digitally. This is another great example of how our livfes in general are slowly moving towards our computer screens.

It has been extremely easy to nativate through job searches when companies are using social media. It makes it easier to locate them as a company and find out what is going on in their company. Also you can learn a little bit about company culture from thei social media.

I always feel like I am on the job hunt and when I am able to use something like social media, which I am extremely familiar with it makes it a little bit easier. Also it can be difficult to hear of a company if they aren't doing it this way. We might not be able to locate the company online if it does not have a social media prescense.

This is a great post that is very informative.

Social media has become a great communication tool for businesses. It allows them to interact with their customers in a more personable way and gives them a chance to still connect with them outside of their store or business. I think it is great that businesses are now using social media to post available jobs. Many teenagers and adults spend a great amount of time on social media, so one advantage is that people are probably more likely to see the job post on the social media channels than just posting the job on a company website. I have noticed that it is sometimes difficult for me to find jobs through a company's website, because there are so many links. Posting a status through social media makes it much easier for me to just click on one link.

I have recently started applying for internships and jobs online. I applied for an internship through LinkedIn because the company only takes applications through that social media website. It was an easy application process and it will now become another way for me to search for jobs. I think recruiting through social media is a great tool and will continue to grow quickly.

Student
I find that social media is a good way to advertise job openings because it is where majority of people spend their time now. However, it gets frusterating when you go to career fairs and create these relationships and then at the end of the conversation they always say "apply online". Then I feel like all that work presnting myself in person just failed because I am now just another application in some data base. I know it is easier for companies to weed out their potential employees but it just makes the competiton that much more harder. I would rather we all still gave our resumes in person the old fashion way. That way it seems more personal and like you have a chance! When companies are hiring mass amounts of people then putting job advertisments in the middle of the shopping items is a good idea because that is where the most traffic is on the website. Applying for jobs online would actually make more sense when companies are hiring massive amounts of people.

Since many people in this society use social media, I think that finding jobs via social media is very smart.

I'm the one who tries to find a job via social media(facebook). In fact, there is a facebook page that many companies including major companiees recruit employees. Moreover, the facebook page also provides how to write resume and other information about getting a job. For that reason, I think using social media to recruit employees is super effective. I do not think the WSJ story is not much compelling. It is just my opinion, however, the pitch makes me to apply a job because of it seems that there will be advantages by reading the WSJ story.

Student

It is true that there are a plenty of retailers are having difficult with hire employees for the holiday shopping seasons. This is because most of them want to and desire to go to shopping instead of working in the stores or shops. Thus, many of retailers are doing pitches on the social media to attract employees to work with them. Those pitches have both of advantages and disadvantages for a retailer in recruiting employees through social media. First of all, the advantages are the employess can feel curious about that jobs whether it is real or not. So that they would like to challenge on them. However, the disadvantages are the employees do not really trust on that advertising on social media as it has no proves or evidences, so that they may just ignore about it. Therefore, the finding jobs via social media has both positive and negative effects on the employees.

Student

I haven't ever applied or found a job online, but I do believe that it is very benefical tool for companies to use to find employees. I've seen posts from UPS recently for seasonal workers on my own Facebook page. I've also been contacted via email by some of my favorite companies about applying for positions that are seasonal. I also feel that loyal customers could be a great target market to recruit as possible employees. I understand why Beverages and More Inc. would be hesitant to tap customers as potential hires, but like the article said, their strategy was successful! In today's society, social media and recruiting customers is a savvy tool for companies to find employees for long term or seasonal.

Student

I have never used social media to get a job, although I think it could be a really great idea. Many teenagers and young adults use social media sites several times a day. If larger retailers need to hire large numbers of employees, advertising on social media would allow for so many more people to know about the job availabilities. Sometimes it's hard to search for jobs by going store to store, so knowing about certain places that are hiring just by logging onto Facebook would be a very beneficial to the companies and to the potential job candidates. When writing this post, I even switched my focus to Facebook and Twitter a few times, just showing how often I use social media.

I am currently using social media in post of finding a full time position post graduation in May. I stay very up to date on certain hashtags, check LinkedIn group pages often, and try any way I can think of in hopes of getting a job. I think that since I am hoping to enter a career in public relations, my best options will be finding a job on social media since that is a large part of what my future position will hold. The only issues I have with this is, i feel that companies are now posting less jobs than before. It is a known fact that employers often look within their own employees to fill an open position. I think that that is not always best for the company. What if the person who is best suited for the position is about to graduate college and does not already have an in with the company?

Student

I find it very interesting that you just posted this as i just started using social media to search for summer internships this week. I think that LinkedIn is a great resource to use when looking for employment because the employer can easily access all of your information, see what kind of people you connect with, and what kind of organizations you are involved in. Social media is an easy way to get to know someone because you know they are not just writing things that you want to hear like when people submit job applications. This is how they represent themselves to the world.

Student

I have never used social media when looking for jobs but I find it interesting that companies are heavily recruiting for future employees by using social media outlets such as twitter and Facebook.  I think it’s a great idea to pitch out jobs that are available by using social media because it is easy to spread job opportunities for those in need of a job.  For example, on Twitter there is an account called Internships@State which helps Michigan State university students looking for internships or jobs near MSU’s campus. I receive tweets daily about job openings on campus and employment information threw their site. Most of their tweets are directed towards checking out MySpartnCareer.  This concept is effective and keeps students update about companies offering employment.

I think that it is important for companies to keep up with the trends of social media. I don't know that I would encourage all businesses to just go and jump on the bandwagon of hiring via social media, but there is defintely a trend going in that direction. I would find it a tad bit creepy if someone casually sent me a message on Facebook in regards to a job. I would find that to be out of place. However, sites like LinkedIn, I feel that that is 100% appropriate.

Student

I would be more concerned over the companies impressions of the social media users, rather than the job applicants impressions of a company for using social media. I'm pretty sure not everyone has a completely professional Facebook page, and ontop of that, are the people who are sitting on Facebook all day the ones they want working for their company?

Student

Finding a new job by social media is great idea. We can find out easily from social media and fast to find out a job. Because social media is very popular and everyone is using social media, companies will have opportunity know their companies to people.  It might be very difficult to people who do not using social media. However, it is good idea for finding a job in social media.

Student

I think recruiting on social media is a new and interesting. The advantage is it is fast and effective to gain more people's attention that there is job openings. It is also easy to spread this news than the orinial ways like posting newspaper ad and etc. However, the disadvantage is people may change their impressions towards this company. From my point of view, I will think that company is not as professional as they need to hire people thorugh social media.

Student

With many aspects of our life switching to online methods, I think it's only logical to use social media for job searching. With so many people using it and reflecting their own personalities and beliefs through their content. I think it is a great way to extend what you know about a person beyond their resume and what they say in their interview. Many people put forth a lot of effort in their online profiles. They know that employers will be looking at that stuff, too. On the company's end, it makes sense to reach out to people on a job search in the same manner. Employers have the opportunity to showcase that they are evolving into a more updated, digital approach which is attractive to many prospective employees. They also can learn more about their candidates and create what feels like a more two-way street. Why would LinkedIn have even been created if we all didn't have the intentions of showcasing our talents and accomplishments to people who may want to work with us?

Student

I personally haven't used social media to get a job. I think that using social media to get a job could be a great thing. I do have to say though that it would be hard to take a twitter post seriously if it was advertising jobs. It just doesnt seem like the place for it. I do think that it could be effective though. It would reach many people and especially for seasonal work it is a great way to hire people fast. I think that the advantage is that you can get people to apply faster and easier but with things such as seasonal jobs where it is advertised all over social media you get people who just kind of want the job so they apply cause it's easy but then they don't follow through. Where as when people apply in person they usually go out of there way to apply to that job and really want it. Overall, I think that using social media to recruit employees could be a good way to get the word out about the jobs and hire people quicker.

Student

Finding jobs through social media is a unique and effective idea. When most young people now adays have most forms of social media, a company's decision to place ad for jobs via social media can be extremely beneficial. Though it may be relatively impersonal to conduct all forms of communication with a perspective employee through various social media accounts, it gives an employer a chance to look over this person's social media accounts, which can give them a chance to prove their competency for the job being offered. A few drawbacks of posting jobs on social media can be that people may not take them seriously. If you regularly see ads on Facebook or Twitter, you usually assume they are just meaningless advertisements and ignore them.

Student

Finding a new job via social media is a great way in nowadays. However, it cannot be the only way or main way to find a job. Because those employers still believe in face to face communication. If not, why there are lots of conference and career gallery on campus still? Employers think communicate in real person is more trustful and reliable. I agree that those "bussniess to bussniess" social medias such as LinkedIn plays an important role in finding a appropriate person when hiring. But only small amount of them will decide through only online chatting.

Student

It seem like a smart move for company to change and gear more towards social media for more online applications, but personally, I would not take the job as seriously if I saw it through my twitter feed or even facebook. I feel like I would only apply for the job if I was already really looking into that company previously. Advantages would probably be the that it costs less time and money for the companies, but disadvantages would be a higher rate of turnover, so these companies wouldn't benefit from this strategy in the long-run.

Student

Using social media to find a job is definitely a great idea.  There are so many opportunities out there in the first place.  By companies using social media to advertisie jobs, there may be many unqualified people applying for the job, but there also may be more qualified people  that apply for a job.  Someone that is qualified for the job may not have known about it if the company did not post on social media.  The company then can check the social media profile of the applicant and gain more followers by advertising jobs on social media.

Student

I think there is a lesson in this story. Originally this company "was hesitant to tap into costumers as potential hires", but by doing so they increased applications by 2/3. That's outstanding, and I think it shoul;d be noted. This shows that possibly customers are your best source of potential hires - they are familiar with your brand, probably loyal to a degree - I see no reason why they wouldn't make excellent employees for yoru organization. By posting online to your social media that talks directly to your consumers on a regular basis, your drastically widening your pool for applicants.

Student

I think it is a great idea to use social media to find a job, but not using as a main way to find a job. Using social media to find a job is like giving us more opportunities. Such as Linkedin, we can learn the company in other way and the company can also learn about us in different way. So i think it is a great idea to use social media to find a job since in our generation social media is very popular.

Student

After reading the article and checking out some of the hiring ads I thought the ad by five below was the most compelling. The ad is basic but clear to the point for someone who is just looking for a seasonal job. The ad describes what you be getting for the opportunity and keep it simple. Other ads were more attractive with colors, cool cartoons, and stuff but they left vague information and I couldn’t tell if they were selling the products or the job. The five below would make me apply for the job if I were looking for work over the holiday break. I think the advantage of using these ads to get seasonal workers is very effective because you can reach a lot of people fast who don’t usually go to the store to ask for jobs and are used to just acting on ad post that they see on social media. But its a disadvantage when you think about some of the candidates might not be good ones and you might waste your time interviewing unwilling candidates instead of focusing a select few who can really get the job done.

Student

I believe that the idea of using social media to search for and hire new employees is a great idea.  It makes your company more notiable in the public eye. When putting it next to discounts  a large portion of people may become distracted with finding and aquiring these deals and look less at the surrounding information. Overall I happen to think this is a great idea.

Student

In my opinion, the possiblity getting a job throught social media is low for now. It only happens in looking for entry-level kinds of job, like holiday sale assisstants. For many higher level of jobs or something requiring specific professiol skills, employers just can't easy target this help-wanted ads to their desired candidates. As the post said "California-based chain of wine, beer and liquor stores initially was hesitant to tap customers as potential hires, but the strategy worked", those who subsctibe them might not have the ability to work for the campany.

Student

I think that retailers posting Help-Wanted ads through social media has its pros and its cons. One pro is that the retailer is reaching the potential employee through a way that can actually grab the person's attention. Social media is taking over today's society and why not use it for help-wanted ads? A con for reaching people through social media is that the help-wanted ad might not be acknowledged in the way that the employer might want. There might be too much clutter in the person's social media profile that the ad might just get disregarded.

Student

Well, I have never used social media to get a job, but the idea doesn't sound so bad to me. I think that one advantage of it is that we could notice someone who has a strong passion about your company or service depending on the way you notice them or interact first with them on the social media platform.

Student

Even though I never used social media to final job, I still believe it is a good way to let more people know a job position, because we know it is a Media generation. In my LinkedIn group, there are a lot of job opportunities come up everyday. For a employer it givet them a quicklyway to get response, meanhwhile, for employees, you must make sure know it is real, and be prepared.

I have not used social media to get a job, but it seems like it is a good idea. Companies have realized that social media is a big way to get in touch with potential employees and customers. However, I think recruting people for jobs via social media has to have excellent execution. Due to the fact that just about everyone uses social media, they'll receive tons of applicants (some that will be a perfect fit and some..not so much) so the way that they will pull off the recruiting, hiring, and how they get certain people in, will determine if this is really a worthwhile idea.

Student

I have never used social media to get a job, but I would never be opposed. The opprotunity for me to get a job via social media is exciting and presents itself almost as a challenge. I think it is clever for large companies and retailers to seek out employees through social media.

First off, if you personally see a post by a company/retailer looking for help, you're most likely linked to the brand in some way or another becuase you have been targeted to see this particular post. This will help companies to filter out applicants who are loyal to their brand and who share a similar passion for the company as if they were already a part of the company.

I was unable to view the whole WSJ article without subscribing, but I think I would probably be interested in applying for a job from a social media pitch. It is benifiticial for employers to get jobs in different ways-- espcially with social media playing such a huge role in success for companies, it is good experience to know how to communicate with companies on a social media level.

Student

I think job postings on social media are really informal and if I was part of the older generation I wouldn't think to look there, but that's why job posting on social media works so well for younger people. If you advertise where the people are, then you are more likely to get a response from the targeted audience. This will also increase the chances of receiving applicants who actively follow these companies on twitter. Unfortunately for many, these opportunities will be missed which is why is it so important to keep up with the change in technology and the way it is used.

Student

I think it’s beneficial for companies and for people searching for jobs to see job positions posted on social media because that is what everyone is using in today’s world. There are several companies that engage a lot more on social media than their websites. Most of the time, I look for social media accounts for information before I look for a website because everything seems to be more up to date. It’s also helpful to get the word are there so people are aware, and if they are interested they can take further action into applying for the job and doing research on their own.

Student

I personally think it is a brilliant idea to recruit on social media. The reasoning being is that I think social media can relfects one's personality pretty accuratelly. Socail media directly reflects ones life, it shows how a person manage his or her account, so we could guess the personality of that person. So by observing one's socially media page would be most accurate way to find out a person's true characteristics. It it also rather easy to recruit a decent amount of people on social media, however, one the other hand, it may draw a great amount of trafftic, so recruiters may have to spend more time on the selecting process.

Student

I am not suprised companies have started to recruit people through social media since lots of people are using social media. I thinik advantage of social media is to exposed a lot of people and increase applicants. However, I feel like recruiting from social media is not formal and serious enough. People might come from everywhere, so the quality will be lower.

Student

I have seen people successfully use social media to get a job, however, I’ve never had it happen to me. One of my good friends saw a celebrity post on Instagram that she was looking for interns, and her email to send your resume. My friend freaked out, sent everything in and got called in for an interview that soon turned into a job. I know that using social media for instances like this is incredibly innovative and doable, I just have a different outlook on it. The way I see things, I usually want to work for the company that doesn’t have to publicize that they have open positions. It’s like what they say about restaurants in Italy. If there are four Italian men standing outside the restaurant begging you to come in and telling you their specials, it means they are looking for business because they aren’t getting much. However, down the street there may be a tiny hole-in-the-wall restaurant with no flashy sign outside that you’ve never heard of. It may take 20 minutes to get seated, but it may be also one of the most famous restaurants in the world. Same goes for jobs, if there is a company publicizing their work atmosphere and open positions etc., there may be a very good reason their letting everyone know.

This particular blog is focused on retailers turning to social media to recruit seasonal employees. There is a negative and positive side to this. The negative side would be that customers are bombarded with inboxes and Twitter feeds are getting blown up with help-wanted ads. This shows traditional hiring methods are failing to produce job candidates and clearly HR is not doing their job. But, on the positive side social media is a wonderful source to recruit people for jobs. It is an easy and efficient way to get the word out fast and to connect with people. You are able to shop around for what kind of job fits your interests, skills, and experience. Personally, none of the advertisements would want me to apply for a job just because I am simply not interested in working retail during the holiday season. But, if it was more along the lines of a secure job something in the field of PR, marketing, or advertising I would be interested because it is tailored towards my interests and needs.
